5.2 Using Mirrors to Form Images The most common place we observe reflection is with mirrors. A flat, smooth mirror is called a plane mirror. All mirrors reflect light according to the law of reflection. blog.nola.com

Plane Mirrors How do the reflected rays form an image that we can see in the mirror? Your brain interprets the pattern of light that reaches your eye as an image that is located behind the mirror.

Image Size and Distance An image in a plane mirror is the same size as the object. The distance from the mirror to the image appears to be the same as the distance from the mirror to the object.

Image Orientation A plane mirror produces an image with the same orientation as the object. However, left and right appear to be reversed by a plane mirror

Concave Mirrors A concave mirror is a mirror that curves inward. Parallel rays bounce off the curved surface of a concave mirror and meet at the focal point. Light rays that come together at a focal point are called converging rays.

Convex Mirrors A convex mirror is a mirror that curves outwards. Parallel light rays reflect as if they came from a focal point behind the mirror. Light rays that spread apart after reflecting are called diverging light rays.
