27/3/2009EuCARD NCLinac Kick-Off Meeting 1 Summary NCLinac Kick-Off CERN, 27-Mar-2009

provisional summary (Erk Jensen) 27/3/2009EuCARD NCLinac Kick-Off Meeting 2

 The first objective – shaking everyone awake – is reached. We have actually lift off.  Thank you all for your constructive participation!  Organisational structure:  Steering Committee: OK  Publication board: OK, with “filtering” on task level. For me to coordinate with project management  Task steering committees: not formal – task leaders decide on the need.  Scientific Advisory Board: OK – suggestions? 27/3/2009EuCARD NCLinac Kick-Off Meeting 3

 Technical/scientific meeting, twice per year, coordinated with CLIC Workshop  Invite a wider community (5 … 10 per beneficiary …?) 27/3/2009EuCARD NCLinac Kick-Off Meeting 4

Both – as observers and actual contributors

 EC will measure “success” by reports – please help to get them right.  In particular, help make the external reports on time – otherwise payment delayed!  It has become very clear that NCLinac is well embedded in a healthy and ongoing R&D program – this is very good and will allow a “flying start”.  The above seems to be true for both CLIC and ILC. 27/3/2009EuCARD NCLinac Kick-Off Meeting 6

 The preparation of the 4 tasks is progressing very well – I’d like to reiterate my thanks to the task coordinators, persuaded that the tasks are in very competent hands, and confident that NCLinac will be a success. 27/3/2009EuCARD NCLinac Kick-Off Meeting 7

 Intermediate (internal) milestones are still under discussion with the partners, but a first draft exists. This is already very useful – thank you very much (to the task leaders and the partners)!  Thanks also for the spending profile, where also a 1 st iteration was presented – thank you! (Task 4: not yet fully – depends on planned hiring – I’ll make some assumptions)  Both these will help me to report to EuCARD SC next Fri!  But of course – the refinement process will have to continue … 27/3/2009EuCARD NCLinac Kick-Off Meeting 8

 NCLinac covers very important R&D issues for CLIC  Understanding breakdown,  Alignment, influence on HOM  Decelerator structures (PETS integration)  Drive beam validation (phase stability)  Preservation of small emittances,  Stabilisation  Fits well bridging after the CDR 27/3/2009EuCARD NCLinac Kick-Off Meeting 9

 Even a SC linac has 30% NC acc. Systems  Timescale fits very well with TDP (-> 2012)  Main points of contact: BDS & MDI  In BDS: alignment, stabilisation, emmitance tuning, laser wire, precision BPMs, feedback 27/3/2009EuCARD NCLinac Kick-Off Meeting 10

 Please suggest associated partners  Please suggest potential members for “External Advisory Board” 27/3/2009EuCARD NCLinac Kick-Off Meeting 11
