Smuggler's Notch Ski Area Treatment Process for the Wastewater Treatment and Disposal System January, 2009

This flowchart shows the wastewater treatment and disposal process at Smugglers Notch. Headworks Lower Aerated Lagoon Chlorination Upper Aerated Lagoon Pump Station Village Collection System Snow- making Building Spray Distribution Septic Tank Pump Station Madonna Base Lodge Septic Tank Pump Station Living Machine Storage Lagoon

The photo below shows typical plant vegetation inside the Smuggler's Notch Living Machine greenhouse. These plants are used to help treat up to 40,000 gallons per day of wastewater from the village area of the resort. These plants bloom at other times of the year.

Another photo of the vegetation of the Living Machine. The plants take up nutrients from wastewater circulating in the tank, aiding in the treatment of wastewater generated in the village area of Smugglers Notch.

Wastewater from the village area of Smuggler's Notch undergoes treatment before being pumped up to the upper aerated lagoon for further treatment. This lagoon is covered due to its close proximity to the village area.

Wastewater from the Madonna base lodge, the public snowmaking building and the village area of Smuggler's Notch undergoes treatment here before being chlorinated and pumped to the sprayfields for disposal.

Treated wastewater from Smuggler's Notch is disposed of in a large sprayfield. This photo shows a typical spray nozzle dispersing treated effluent.
