TO GET CLASS CREDIT You must attend this training and remember to SIGN IN. Commit to judge 3 rounds. Follow through in judging those rounds. Turn in a short response on your judging experience.

WHO CAN JUDGE? If you are over 18. Have any experience or interest in speech or debate (if you are in a public speaking class that counts). Have not competed in California forensics in the last 2 years.

TOURNAMENT DETAILS Bakersfield High School Forensics Tournament Frontier High School North High School Garces High School Independence High School Liberty High School

Volunteer Day- Is like a trip to the Airport You are going to have to come early!!! If you are not early for check-in they will give away your seat (at least 30 minutes early). You will have to read the posted signs to find where you are going (head for Cafeteria). Bring homework, cell phone and anything you need while you wait until its your turn to judge. The tournament will feed you. So you will not leave the premises until your trip is complete.

What to Expect DRESS CODE-Students will all be dressed in business attire. Most judges will be in jeans. You are an ambassador of CSUB so please do not wear anything inappropriate. JARGON- Like any sport or sub-culture is lingo associated. Do not be embarrassed if someone uses jargon you don’t understand just be honest & ask what they mean. COMPETITORS- The students will be performing speeches that they have been reciting in a daily class for at least 6 months. There will not be anyone reading off of notes or breaking major rules. They may be high school students but be prepared to be impressed.

Rules for Volunteers- Mums the Word No fraternizing with students. Do not let students enter a room without you or another judge present. You cannot ask questions about who to vote for. You must make the decision on your own. Do not speak to other judges in your round. You must disclose any affiliation you may have (sibling, friend or if you are a recent alumnus of a competing school).

Rules for Volunteers- Continued RESPECT THE STUDENT Never mark a student down because you disagree with them. Make sure you are judging on the merit of performance and not your personal beliefs. Give these students your full attention for the entire round because they have worked very hard to impress you. No texting, eating or smoke breaks. Turn off your cell phone.

How do I Decide Who Wins? Take notes. I write down if I was laughing so I remember when I go back to rank speakers. Write your decision for choosing on the ballot. In the end you can’t always say why you like WoW better than Street Fighter. But you know what you like better. Did their choice appeal to you in some way? How was their memorization? How was their use of evidence (if relevant)? How was their speaking ability?

Thanks for Volunteering Please do not forget to SIGN IN & bring CCB you judging card !
