Subordinate= cannot stand alone (dependent) Example: Although my friend invited me to a party, I do not want to go. Although my friend invited me to a party (what?) I do not want to go. (where?) Compound/Complex Sentence A sentence with two or more independent clauses and at least one dependent clause. Tip: You know it is dependent because it cannot stand alone—it needs the others. Example: We decided that the movie was too violent, but our children, who like to watch scary movies, thought we were wrong.
