4 Two related ideas—each one could stand on their own.
Compound Sentence: a sentence containing two or more clauses that can stand independently. Example: My students are frustrated and students wish I had a different final. Two related ideas—each one could stand on their own.

5 Skinny side Complex Sentence A sentence containing one or more subordinate clauses. REMINDER: Sentence= complete thought—subject and verb. Subordinate= cannot stand alone (dependent) Example: Although I have done much work on this project, I still do not understand the point of it. Although I have done much work on this project (what?) I still do not understand the point of it. (what?) When they joined together=complex sentence

6 Compound/Complex Sentence
A sentence with two or more independent clauses and at least one dependent clause. Tip: You know it is dependent because it cannot stand alone—it needs the others. Example: This is a good project for my students, who think it is too much; I can understand how they might be frustrated.

7 Gerunds: Gerund is a noun formed by taking a verb and adding the suffix “-ing.” The gerund form of “give,” for example, is “giving.”. Identify the gerund in these sentences: Traveling might satisfy your desire for new experiences. My cat's favorite activity is sleeping. Hint: look for the word that is the action, if it has “ing”, it is probably the gerund.
