PROJECT 3: HOW DO WE COMMUNICATE

Agenda  Today the goal is simple—figure out your topic for paper 3. Here is the plan to make that happen.  Reintroduce both options for paper 3  Group Activity  Close of reading of example  In-class blog  Questions

Assignment 3  The super basic goal of assignment 3 is to figure out how communication happens, knowledge is generated, or work practices in your subject area.  This will happen through research!

Assignment 3: Prompt1  Choose a community that you wrote about or one you are a part of research its communication practices, knowledge/product creation practices and make an argument for how to do that process successfully.  That’s it!

Assignment 3: Prompt 2  Choose a future career that you are interested in and research its communication practices, knowledge/product creation practices and make an argument for how to do that process successfully.  Again, that’s it!

Important points  Scope is really important for this assignment  Choosing something really super specific will make this really hard. For instance, high soccer would be incredibly difficult. Start large and narrow down.  All spoken words is also difficult.  While you should think broadly about writing and communication, picking a community or profession that is purely spoken is also hard.

Example  Reading  Writing  Technology  Talking

How to create knowledge in the discipline of writing.  Reading  Journals  s  Papers  Tweets/Facebook  Websites  Writing  s  Papers  Proposals  Tweets/Facebook  Reading Responses  Technology  Computers  Copiers  The internet  Presentation  Talking  Group discussion  Meetings  Conferences  Interviewing  Presenting

How to create knowledge in the discipline of writing.  Writing a Journal Article  Conducting Research Analyzing results  Check websites for “Calls for Papers” Read descriptions  Draft a paper that fits the description Revise.  Submit a draft. Revise based on reviewer comments.

So what is happening?  Builds information  Spoken Word  Text  Generating Ideas  Reading (foundation)  Talking/Reviewing

Group Activity  In groups (3-5) I want you to tell me how to be a good Spartan (MSU). What is done most often, what is done the least, what is important, what isn’t important, etc. In this you should also talk about the different types of situations (academic, social) and how communication changes.  1 person should blog your findings, you will present to the class

 What is a good Spartan?  Academics How often need to go to class? How to use resources on Campus? How to communicate with profs?  Social What is spirit? Going to football games? Clubs & groups

A closer look  Take a look at the example assignment I uploaded  Read it and write down your questions  We’ll talk about it

In-class Blog  For this in-class blog there are two options you can work on. 1. Brainstorm a topic for your paper (option 1 or 2) Focus on trying to find something that you will be able to write about for (5-8 pages) 2. Come up with a research plan. Where are you going to find sources? Who are you going to interview? Etc. Basically, what do you need to complete your paper?
