MORE THAN “MERE MEN” Pine Grove Church of Christ – 03/27/11

More than “Mere Men”  I Corinthians 3:1-3 –  (NKJ) “are you not carnal and behaving like mere men”  (KJ) “are you not carnal and walk as men”  (ESV) “are you not of the flesh and behaving only in a human way”  (NIV) “… are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere men”

MORE THAN “MERE MEN” – CHRIST AS OUR FOUNDATION Pine Grove Church of Christ – 03/27/11

Christ as Our Foundation  I Corinthians 3:4-11 –  “For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.”

Christ as Our Foundation  Definition of Foundation:  The basis or groundwork of anything;  The base on which something stands;  The basis on which something stands or is supported

Christ as Our Foundation  Jesus as Our Only Foundation

Jesus as Our Only Foundation  I Corinthians 3:4-11 –  “For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.”  John 14:1-6 –  “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”

Jesus as Our Only Foundation  Acts 4:10-12 –  “Nor is their salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”  Philippians 4:13 –  “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

Christ as Our Foundation  Jesus as Our Only Foundation  Not Self, Men, or Money

Not Self, Men, or Money  Not Self:  Proverbs 14:12 – “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.”  Jeremiah 10:23 – “O Lord, I know the way of man is not in himself; It is not in man who walks to direct his own steps.”

Not Self, Men, or Money  Not Men:  Matthew 10:37 – “He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me.”  Acts 4:10-12 – “Nor is their salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

Not Self, Men, or Money  Not Money:  I Timothy 6:17 – “Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy.”  Matthew 6:24 – “No one can serve two masters… You cannot serve God and mammon.” NIV, ESV (You cannot serve God and Money)

Christ as Our Foundation  Jesus as Our Only Foundation  Not Self, Men, or Money  Hearing & Doing

Hearing & Doing  Matthew 7:24-27 –  “Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock:”  “and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.”

Hearing & Doing  John 14:15 –  “If you love Me, keep My commandments.”  John 14:23 –  “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him.”

Hearing & Doing  James 1:21-22 –  “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.”

Conclusion  God does not want us to be like “Mere Men”.  We are to be More, Different, & Like Christ  We must place our focus on Christ, God’s Will, & Heaven  Christ must be our Foundation

Conclusion  Psalm 127:1 –  “Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it”

God’s Plan of Salvation  Hear the Word of God (Acts 2:22)  Believe in Jesus (Acts16:30-34)  Repent of Sins (Acts 2:38)  Confess Faith in Christ (Acts 8:37)  Be Baptized in Water (Acts 2:38)  Remain Faithful & Grow(II Peter 3:18)  If err, repent and pray to God (I John 1:9)

Lord’s Supper  Partaking of the Bread:  I Peter 2:24 –  “who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness— by whose stripes you were healed.”

Lord’s Supper  Partaking of the Fruit of the Vine:  Ephesians 1:7 –  “In Him (Christ) we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace”

Giving  I Corinthians 16:1-2 –  (1) “Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given order to the churches of Galatia, even so do ye”  (2)“Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him"
