Respiratory System Chapter What is Respiration?  Respiration is not just breathing in oxygen  Once oxygen is pulled into the lungs, it is carried.
Respiratory System Breathing Is the movement of air into and out of the lungs Allows your respiratory system to take in oxygen and eliminate carbon.

Respiratory System By Stephen Koehler

2 functions of respiratory system  Take in oxygen  Breathe out carbon dioxide

Respiration  Respiration is a process that takes place in your cells.  It gives you energy.  Oxygen is essential for respiration to take place.  Respiration could not happen without the digestive and circulatory system

Path of Air  Air goes into the nose down into the pharynx to the trachea-----air passes into the bronchi tubes to the lungs

Respiratory System  The two lungs are the main organs of the respiratory system.  Lungs are made up of tiny structures called alveoli  Alveoli is a hollow sack

How you Breathe  Breathing is controlled by the diaphragm  Diaphragm are the muscles right below the lungs  When a person breathes in diaphragm contracts or gets shorter/space inside the chest gets bigger  When a person breathes out the diaphragm relaxes/space inside the chest gets smaller

Smoking and your Health  Nicotine is a chemical in tobacco that speeds up the heart and raises blood pressure  Tar is a dark, sticky material that forms from burning tobacco  When people smoke Tar sticks to the tiny hairs that lines the respiratory system  Tar in the lungs is a cause of cancer

Health Problems and Smoking  Smoking can cause people to develop chronic bronchitis, emphysema, lung cancer, and atherosclerosis  Bronchitis is a disease of the breathing passages. The passages get narrow and clogged with mucus  Emphysema is a disease of the lungs  The tissues of the lungs are destroyed and so it makes it harder for Gas exchange to take place  Lung Cancer is cancer of the lungs. Lumps of cancer tissue, or tumors, grow out of control and it makes it hard for gas exchange to take place

Health Problems continued  Atherosclerosis is when chemicals in tobacco smoke get into the blood.  Fatty tissues develop from chemicals in smoke and it makes it hard for gas exchange to take place  Tobacco use such as Chewing tobacco and Dip or Snuff can cause mouth cancer, throat cancer, gum disease and tooth loss  The chemicals in Chewing tobacco, Dip or snuff cause the gums to decay and bleed  The chemicals in tobacco can cause cancer which are lumps that can be found in the throat or mouth.
