Building Your Business PCG, 8 th November, 2012

What are we going to do? A mix of …. Getting you ‘on fire’ for 2013 ! Planning for business success in 6 simple steps – the 6P™ Model for Business Excellence It’s all about YOU !!! As a person What are you going to do next ! Some inspiration from those with very little !

Questions as we go……..

6P™ Model for Business Excellence Purpose Process People Partnerships Performance PR Whole business diagnostic Problem solving tool Developing a business case Prioritising actions Focused improvement in one or more areas

Business Benefits Medium Size Housing Association Staff 450 SME Feedback £2.3m increase in profit“Doing less work with more turnover” Expenditure Savings £2.2mIncrease in customer contract value 2.4% increase in customer satisfaction (score ) “We know where we are – compared to our longer term focus” Improvement in all their KPI’s“More free time to work on the business” Reduction in sickness of 3.2% (5.7% to 2.5%) “We are much more customer-focused”

What others have said … so far ! “Clear, practical and thought provoking”; “Challenging but motivational approach” “The great thing about it is that it can be applied to any business problem or planning issue that you want to address” “Even as a small business owner, I could immediately see the practical application for several different aspects of my business” “It makes you think about what you are doing, why you are doing it, and are you targeting the right people” “It not only gave me the confidence to go ahead with the new venture, but it also gave me a step by step plan on what to do and who to speak to” “Watch your business or private life positively turn itself on its head... You won’t regret it”

What’s your Business “BIG ISSUE” right now? Purpose Process People Partnerships Performance PR

Purpose What is it that you want to achieve from resolving this business issue? Put a timescale on it Put a measure of success on it Be VERY VERY clear ! Your own issue could be profit, time, exit strategy, satisfaction?

Performance Work backwards, using an appropriate timescale, and put timescales and measures along the way Be VERY VERY clear ! Your own issue, targets could be weekly £’s, volumes, conversions, hours, rewards?

Process Record the processes you need to help you achieve this particular business issue Identify what effective use of IT you need What are the key risks to managed this particular issue? Identify the costs involved and what you would do to minimise these Identify the financial information you would need

People (your existing customers) Identify how your existing customers are driving the problem and/or solution What engagement with your existing customers is required? Do you manage the relationship well using CRM; diary planning, prioritisation of time?

People (you and your staff) Identify who is involved in this particular issue For those involved do they know what the problem is – and are they part of the success Do they know this? Are they the right people to help you succeed in this issue Have you/they the skills to succeed? Have you/they the motivation to succeed?

Partnerships Identify if anyone else is involved from your supply chain Identify if they know what the problem is – are they a part of it What do they need to do to help resolve this issue Are they performing in the way you expect? Can they ‘open any doors’?

PR – Comms, Marketing and PR To resolve this issue identify what internal communications need to take place Identify what communications are required with customers – new and existing (as appropriate) Identify what messages need to be clear – to whom and how What publicity might be appropriate? Are you building in enough time for marketing – in the right way?

You as a person !

Personal Profiling These are times of change - can you lead you/your team? Understand yourself – your drivers; behaviours; situations you respond well in; and those you don’t; people you respond well to; or don’t ! It’s all about “flow” – productivity; energised; engaged; fun; impacts on the bottom line Understand your team Helps you build your mastermind team

Leading yourself/your team Understand how you/your team deal with change – and then how you work on that People will feel alone even if they are not Different individual levels of readiness for change Concern over resources – but it’s “investment” Taking the pressure off - revert to old behaviours Keeping eyes open for new opportunities Use the 6P™ Model for Business Excellence to check

What motivates you?

Some do a lot with very little !

Food for thought for us all…… Purpose – long term goals; clear planning Performance – short term goals for focus Process – have raw data; understand what the data is telling us; use it! People – belief / business skills / JDI ! Partnerships – looking external to self PR – making time for building long term relationships, marketing and PR
