Ruby Bridges An Inspiration

Introduction Ruby Bridges is a wonderful woman. She helped with the segregation act in the 60s. She was not afraid to go to school. And she was really brave for going.

Arguing At Ruby’s house there was a lot of arguing. Her parents fought over a lot of things. The biggest thing they argued over was the fact that Ruby was selected to go to an interrogated school. Her father thought it was to dangerous. Her mother thought it would be a good opportunity for her daughter to be exposed to different things.

Barbara Henry Barbara Henry was Ruby’s teacher in the first grade. Barbara Henry and Ruby Bridges had a close relationship even though they were not family. Mrs. Henry helped Ruby forget about the angry mobs of protesters and a lot of other things.

Doll For a long time women carried black dolls in black coffins and threatened to kill Ruby and poison her family!

Friends Ruby often longed for friends. She didn’t like sitting by herself with only her teacher to talk to. I bet it was really boring. She couldn’t even leave the room for lunch or recess!

Helped Ruby was often helped by a nice family. They were called The Smiths. They often let Ruby come to their house if her mom didn’t get to their house early enough. When she was walking home she would put her thumbs up and smile to let them know she was okay.

Interrogation Ruby Bridges school was interrogated which means her school was open to any race. Many people did not want interrogation in schools. It was a hard time for Ruby.

Justice African American people wanted all the angry mobs of people to go to jail. They would all shout ‘justice for Ruby, outside of courtrooms.

Ku Klux Klan The Ku Klux Klan stampeded through New Orleans all the time. They burned crosses and homes because they didn’t like your religion or skin color. Isn’t that dumb. It scared Ruby half to death. She thought they would burn her house next.

Louisiana Ruby’s family moved to New Orleans, Louisiana. They moved there so Ruby could go to her new school. It was really hard for them to adjust. //geology.com

Mobs Angry mobs of people came to Ruby’s school every day. They threatened to break into her house and ruin her house. She thought they were really mean. She said she tried not to hate the people, but it was really hard no to. /plagueyears.files.wordpress.com

NAACP NAACP stands for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. They are the people that selected six students (including Ruby Bridges) to go to interrogated schools. They helped Ruby and her family get through tough times.

Other Children For a long time Ruby was by herself. One day she found out there were other kids in the school.18 to be exact! She was very exited to meet them. She found out she had to stay in her classroom for her safety. She couldn’t go play with the other kids.

Protesters Angry mobs of protesters would stand outside Ruby’s school and shout bad things to Ruby and her mother. They wanted segregation not interrogation.

Quiet Ruby was very quiet at home. She didn’t tell her mother or father about how she felt. She would come home and not say a word.

Riots There were riots in the 1960’s. if you had a different point of view that someone didn’t like you had a fight. Then a bunch of other people would break out in fights and then a huge riot would start.

Through My Eyes Ruby Bridges has a book out called Through My Eyes by Ruby Bridges. It tells about her life in school. It is a really good book.

Unfriendly The people Ruby knew were very unfriendly. They stopped talking to her because she went to an interrogated school. They left her alone in her time of need. People were so mean Ruby had to be escorted to school.

Violence There was lots of violence at Ruby’s school. The kids beat you up if they even caught you talking to Ruby! It was really bad. It made her cry to see that her only friend could be beat up for talking to her.

William Frantz Elementary Ruby Bridges attended William Frantz Elementary. It was one of the few schools that was interrogated. /

By the time Ruby was 11 she had a better life and friends. Everything ran smoothly at her school. She was not getting death threats anymore. XI (12) /

Young Ruby was very young when she was selected to go to William Frantz Elementary School. She was only in first grade when she was put to the ultimate test.

Zen (calm) After everything was over Ruby and her mother became very zen. She described it as not having a care in the world. She finally had a little fun in her life. She used meditation to calm herself down when she was sad or angry.

Conclusion Today Ruby is 58 years old. She is happily married. She has 4 boys and lives with her husband.
