How do you know your students are learning what they need to learn to be successful in there chosen field?

Indirect Evidence of Student Learning Surveys Exit Interviews Focus Groups Graduate Follow-up Studies Retention Rates External or peer review Placement Rates

Direct Evidence of Student Learning Portfolio Standardized Tests Presentations Reflective Papers National licensure or certification Project or activity Capstone Project

Learning Outcomes Assessment Plan Focuses on student learning and experiences associated with the specific program of study What should students learn in the program in order to be successful on the job? How do we determine they have learned the skills necessary? What can we do differently to increase student learning in the program?

Why do you need a Learning Outcomes Assessment Plan? Are your students learning what you think they should be learning? Are your students learning what should know to be employed in their field? What can you do to improve your curriculum? How do you ensure appropriate rigor for degree level?

Key components to an effective Learning Outcomes Assessment Plan Ongoing evaluation; Evidence of success or failure; Reflects the school mission as well as the program mission; Designed and implemented by faculty.

Steps to creating a Learning Outcomes Assessment Plan Create 5-7 program specific learning outcomes. Create 2-3 general education learning outcomes (same learning outcomes for every program). Select assessments for each program learning outcome. Collect data from assessments. Make changes to curriculum based on data collected.

Student Learning Outcomes The knowledge and skills students should acquire before successfully completing program of study. Learning Outcome: Focuses on the activity of the learner; Specific; Action oriented; Appropriate for the program level (AAS, BS, MBA).

Creating program student learning outcomes The outcomes should… be tied mission; written clearly; be supported by curriculum; be throughout the curriculum (not all at the end); be shared throughout the school; describe student performance; be specific; start with an action verb that indicates observable and measurable behavior.

Assessment measures Assessment measures help us determine whether or not a student has met the student learning outcome. The determined assessment must be used consistently between instructors and be graded using standard criteria (rubrics).

Program Learning Outcome: Prepare legal documents and forms for various legal areas. Assessment Description: Draft Civil Complaint Course: LA205 Litigation I Data Measured: Average scores for project and number of students. Goal: 70% or higher How will data be collected: LA205 Litigation I instructors to submit to Network Dean by quarter end average scores and areas of strengths and weaknesses based on common grading rubric for one civil complaint.

Program Learning Outcome: Record patient medical information using appropriate veterinary medical terminology. Assessment Description: Medical record charting assignments, graded using standard rubric and averaged for the quarter. Course: VT292 Data Measured: Accuracy, neatness, correct terminology, completeness, timeliness. Goal: Student average > 90% in VT292 How will data be collected: Instructor for VT292 will post each students average for the quarter
