“The People of the Desert” Southwest Indians “The People of the Desert”

Where did they live? They lived in the southwestern part of the United States, in the area which is now known as Arizona and New Mexico.

What was the name of the tribe that we have studied? The Pueblo

What were the homes of the Southwest Indians called? Pueblos – multi-storied homes that look like apartment buildings

Mesas are high, flat mountains where the pueblo homes were built. What are mesas? Mesas are high, flat mountains where the pueblo homes were built.

What were the pueblos made of? Pueblo homes were made out of adobe, which is made using dried mud, straw, or grass.

What does “pueblo” mean? The word “pueblo” means town in Spanish.

What was the job of Pueblo Indian men? The main job of the men was to farm the land. They grew corn, beans, squash, sunflowers, and cotton.

What was the job of the Pueblo Indian women? The women cooked, made clothing, took care of the children, and made beautiful pottery and baskets.

What was the transportation for the Pueblo Indians? Walking was their only form of transportation.

What is the plant life in the Southwest? Cactus is the only plant life found in the southwest United States.

What is the land like in the Southwest? The land of the Southwest is known for its deserts and high flatlands.

What is the climate like in the Southwest United States? The climate of the Southwest is known for its hot days, cold nights, and little rainfall.
