Dangers of tobacco Use 1.State short term effects of tobacco use. 2.Summarize the long term health risks of tobacco use. 3.State the effects of second hand smoke. 4.Describe how smoking effects the unborn child of smokers.

Short Term Effects of Tobacco Use Stimulates the brain reward system. Increases heart rate and blood pressure. Increases breathing rate. Increases blood sugar levels. Stimulates the vomit reflex. Carbon monoxide blocks oxygen from getting into the blood stream. Tar irritates the lungs, which lead to coughing. Dip irritates the inside of the mouth. Gums become irritated and raw, which creates sores and cancer of the mouth. Dip stains teeth and cause bad breath.

Long Term Effects Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States. Mouth- Smoking changes the chemical balance inside the mouth, leading to increased plaque, gum disease, and tooth decay. Tar stain the teeth. Brain: Reducing oxygen to the brain, narrows the blood vessels, and can lead to strokes. Nicotine changes the brain chemically leading to addiction. Heart: Increases heart rate and blood pressure and narrows the blood vessels. Increases the risk of hardened and clogged arties, which causes heart attack. Lungs: Smoking puts carcinogens directly into the lungs. Kills the tiny filtering hairs in the lungs. Thus increasing the likelihood of bronchitis, emphysema, and lung cancer. Skin: Breaks down the proteins that gives the skin elasticity. Which leads to wrinkles and premature aging. Smoking also increases the chance of skin cancer. Immune System: Chemicals in smoke reduce the activity of immune system cells. Increasing the chances of suffering from diseases like cancer.

Long Term Effects Addiction: Nicotine stimulates the brain reward system and changes the way the brain functions. Bronchitis and Emphysema: The cilia is paralyzed and then killed by smoke. Building up large amount of tar and inhaled particles in the lungs. This results in chronic coughing. This causes the bronchi to swell, making it harder to breath. All this can lead to chronic bronchitis and infection. Emphysema is respiratory disease in which air cannot move in and out of the lungs because the alveoli become blocked or loose their elasticity. This person cannot get enough oxygen into the body. COPD: Is a disease that is the combination of chronic bronchitis and obstructive emphysema. This causes chronic coughing, difficulty breathing, frequent infections, and eventually death due to respiratory failure. Heart and Artery Disease: Nicotine increases heart rate and narrows blood vessels and eventually causes arties to become hardened and clogged. This icreases the risk of heart attack, blood clots, and stroke. Cancer: Smoking promotes several kinds of cancers. Lung, bladder, pancreas, cervix, and kidney to name a few. Mouth and throat cancer are also caused by tobacco.

Effects of Non Smokers The first source of smoke is Sidestream. This is the smoke that escapes the tip of the cigarette, pipe, or cigar. This can be as much as half the smoke from a cigarette. Mainstream smoke is the smoke that is inhaled by the smoker. Secondhand Smoke is the smoke inhaled by the non smoker. More than 3,000 people die from lung cancer caused by this smoke. For every 8 people killed by their own smoking 1 non smoker dies. Effects of smoking during pregnancy: Rick of miscarriage Risk of premature death Low birth rate Slow growth rate Risk of sids Risk of developing respiratory illness. Risk of developing learning difficulties.
