NPS MANAGEMENT PLANNING FOR THE NORTH CANDADIAN RIVER (from Canton dam through Lake Overholser)

Greg Kloxin – Senior Technical Writer Oklahoma Conservation Commission Water Quality Division P.O. Box N. Lincoln Blvd., Room 224 Oklahoma City, OK Ph:

OCC is states technical lead for nonpoint source program in the state The NPS program is non-regulatory Pollution abatement accomplished via education and voluntary implementation of BMPs with cost share incentives WHO?

OCC is engaged in drafting a Watershed Based Plan (WBP) for the segment from Canton Lake dam to Lake Overholser dam WBP is a holistic context for planning and management: Intro – plan area, description, partners, background Info and analysis –ids key pollutants, sources, current loads, reports monitoring results to date; info needed to set WQ goals Proposed management measures – load reductions needed, BMPs proposed, reductions expected from BMPs, targeting of BMPs Implementation plan – public info/ed. and outreach plan; project schedule and costs Monitoring and adaptive management approach – interim milestones, load reduction criteria, evaluation framework, monitoring plan and partners WHAT?

OCC currently working with OSU to develop model to accomplish the following: 1) identify critical source areas contributing pollutants to Lake Overholser 2) determine the endpoint for Lake Overholser necessary to meet Oklahoma Water Quality Standards 3) determine possible agricultural practices that may be implemented to meet this endpoint WHEN?

OCC anticipates WBP with finished model by first part of next year Working with relevant conservation districts to build necessary local stakeholder participation (CDs came to us before the TMDL was released) Work to begin implementation project to fund locally led educational efforts, BMP implementation in critical source areas and monitoring necessary to show results HOW?
