Welcome to Boost Your Child’s Literacy and Numeracy Evening

Why involve Parents? ‘Remember, when you are talking to a parent, you are talking to the world’s greatest expert on this child.’

Building Literacy and Numeracy Skills at Bedford Academy We need your help…

Benefits Use your expertise and willingness to be an effective learning resource for your children. Develop your confidence, interest and skills to help your child with work. Offer you strategies to support your child’s learning.

Numeracy What does a mathematician looks like? Can you imagine a world without mathematics?

Expectation vs Facts Numeracy Expectation: Level 4 achieved at the end of Key Stage 2 (Year 6) Fact: Nearly 38% of BA students are below Level 4 Expectation: Level 5 achieved at the end of Key Stage 3 (Year 9) Fact: Nearly 44 % are below Level 5 before they arrive

Why is Literacy Important? Nationally: Higher expectations for GCSE results. Two thirds of students with serious behaviour problems have literacy problems. 65% of young people in Young Offenders Institutes have communication difficulties. 47% of employers cannot get recruits with the communication skills they need. 65% of prisoners have literacy problems.

Why is Literacy Important? At Bedford Academy: 68% of our Year 9 students have reading ages below their chronological (real) age. 68% of our Year 9 students are working below the national average level for English. Literacy levels have a direct impact on student’s individual attainment at G.C.S.E. Without Literacy, students are unable to access the curriculum in ANY subject!

Literacy 4 areas of communication Reading  Writing Speaking  Listening Year hours every fortnight.
