Polyatomic Ions

Anions and Cations OH My!!! Anions are Negative Ions A Negative ION = ANION Cations are Positive Ions ca+ions (meow)

An anion (-) (pronounced æn. aɪ An anion (-) (pronounced æn.aɪ.ən or an-eye-ən), from the Greek word ἄνω (ánō), meaning "up", is an ion with more electrons than protons, giving it a net negative charge. A cation (+) (pronounced kæt.aɪ.ən or kat-eye-ən), from the Greek word κατά (katá), meaning "down", is an ion with fewer electrons than protons, giving it a positive charge.

Some Common Polyatomic Anions Acetate CH3COO− Carbonate CO3−2 Chlorate ClO3− Chromate CrO4−2 Cyanide CN− Dichromate Cr2O7−2 Hydroxide OH− Nitrate NO3− Nitrite NO2− Permanganate MnO4− Phosphate PO4−3 Sulfate SO4−2

Some Common Polyatomic Cations meow Ammonium NH4+ Hydronium H3O+
