Definitions Curriculum Vitae: A complete chronological history of your educational and employment background and accomplishments

Definitions Resume’/Executive Summary: This is a 1-3 page document that accompanies your CV as an overview of your credentials highlighting your strengths, accomplishments and qualifications related to a specific position.

Format-Exec Summary Personal Information: Name, address, phone, fax and Opening Statement: Concise statement of what you would like to do and how you would add value to the organization Qualifications Summary Accomplishments Overview Experience: list in reverse chronological order positions Education: Degrees and Institutions in reverse chronological order

Definitions Biographical Sketch: This is usually needed for NIH grant requests and is found at: Biographical Statement: Usually in narrative form, this identifies your current position, experience and major accomplishments targeted to a specific audience. Can be used in introductions, nominations etc.

Tips and Strategies Consider preparing an “external CV” Develop a system that works to facilitate updating your materials Update entire package at same time and try to do it twice a year (CVs; Bio Sketch; Teaching Portfolio) Keep track of the date of up-dating

Tips and Strategies Do Not include: SSN, age, race, marital status, children, disability, political affiliation, religion, salary, DEA numbers

Tips and Stategies FONT: Use point font for Name; pt for headings; pt for text. Use same font throughout and do not use flowery fonts FORMAT: Be consistent and concise; include page number and name header on each page and be neat

Tips and Strategies Paper: Use white/off-white lb paper Printing: Use laser printer Proofread and Spell Check For external CV: Avoid placing dates in left-hand margin as this emphasizes the date and not the activity Collect things as they occur eg in “real” time—don’t try to look for them later

Tips and Strategies re: Publications List in chronological order for ease of updating Number them Highlight your name in bold If you are not first author on publications for which your trainee is first, note that with asterisk
