Presentation transcript:

Megalithic construction - the era in the architecture when the huge stone blocks were used as a primary building material. They are found everywhere in the world. One of the most famous examples of such buildings is Stonehenge. Until today it isn't known exactly how prehistoric people created the stone circle made from large rocks without use of any machines. The Ggantija Temple is also one of the examples of the megalithic architecture.

In ancient times, Roman buildings were especially famous. Devising a cement allowed for mastering the technique of producing mortars and daub. The brick firing from the II century BC contributed to the turning point in the Roman art. In ancient times a brick was already a primary building material. The examples of first primitive machinery which local workers used were levers and wooden sheepsfoot rollers. The most well-known buildings from that era are the Coliseum, the Pantheon in Rome, Roman Forum.

During this age people started to build large scale buildings, churches and cathedrals of different kind. With time, apart from attempts to copy the antique adornment, new style of decorations often imitating patterns applied in the goldsmithing were developed. A limestone and a stone was used in the construction as the primary building materials. An occupation of stonemason was the hardest job to do at the time. Not only they had to forge the stone, but also they had to transport it to the building site later on. In the Middle Ages cranes and hoists were a popular construction equipment. The most known medieval building are the Hagia Sophia, and the Cathedral in Milan.

The Renaissance in architecture reflected the philosophical views of the revival, and its idea was first created in Italy. The early modern period didn't use any new building materials. Still, a stone and brick were used. Walls are plastered. Timbers and glass were widely used.

At present, the architecture and the manner of the construction changed a lot. A quantum leap was made when comparing the contemporary times with the ancient times. Architects try to use durable, but aesthetic building materials. Some buildings are being ranked as the works of art, or even wonders. The machinery used in the construction are lifts, bulldozers, excavators, roadrollers and many more. We apply a lot of modern building materials like steel, wood, brick, concrete, glass. There are a lot of beautiful buildings in the world, inter alia the Museum of Guggenheim in Bilbao, the City of Arts and Sciences in Spain, the Cybertecture Egg in Mumbai.
