Presentation transcript:

Weather Instruments S4E4 Students will analyze weather charts/maps and collect weather data to predict weather events and infer patterns and seasonal changes. a. Identify weather instruments and explain how each is used in gathering weather data and making forecasts (thermometer, rain gauge, barometer, wind vane, anemometer). Created for TCSS

Observation Used to look at the sky to make observations about cloud cover and sky conditions.

Thermometer A tool used for measuring temperature. Temperature is how hot or cold something is.

Rain Gauge A rain gauge is used to measure precipitation. Precipitation is any form of water particles, either liquid or solid, which falls from the sky and reaches the ground.

Barometer A barometer measures air pressure. It tells whether air pressure is high or low.

Wind Vane A wind vane, also called a weather vane, is used to measure the direction of the wind. The large side of the arrow catches the wind and causes the arrow to spin pointing in the direction the wind is blowing.

Anemometer An anemometer is a tool used to measure wind speed. The cups on the anemometer spin in the wind.
