Grade 9 IB Parent Night

A Brief Program Overview  Students will eventually take 6 IB courses from the hexagon below

This year’s courses…  In grade 9, students satisfy certain core requirements of the Ontario Diploma while receiving enrichment in IB core courses  Ways courses are enriched: courses will feature enhanced content as well as be delivered at a faster pace than their Ontario counterparts

 All courses are meant to prepare students for the challenge of the IB Diploma courses which officially begin in grade 11  Students must develop skills for success now, if they haven’t already, that will allow them to excel in IB, and high school in general  Which brings us to…

HOMEWORK!  Colonel By has homework  Homework time can vary throughout the year, often increasing around reporting periods  Staying on top of homework is the first step to being successful  Be involved with your child

Speaking of Involvement…  Students who are involved, or have parents involved with school, tend to place more importance on school  ManageBac is a great way to see what your child is doing in school  Parents will have an opportunity to join our IB Parent Volunteer group  Students can find many clubs, teams, and intramural activities to join

When times get tough…  The first year of high school can be a big adjustment for a teenager, especially teenagers who have enjoyed a great deal of success in grade 8  Keep the lines of communication open (IB Coordinator, Guidance Counsellors, Teachers, Vice Principals, Principal)  Home support…and cookies or ice cream or both

Finding Balance  IB can be a very rewarding challenge, but finding a balance of work and outside activities is very important  Understand that being excellent does not necessarily mean being perfect  “Be perfect/excellent in the time you have.”

Extra Help  Students are encouraged to seek out their teachers for help and, if needed, to seek out tutors at school  Guidance will happily point your child in the direction of a tutor  Many departments have their own allotted extra help times

ManageBac  an electronic community meant to quickly connect teachers, students, and parents  Parents are able to see what their child joins, aiding them in assisting their child at home  Please ask your child’s subject teacher about it if the course is not appearing
