Training New Advisors Maureen Baldwin Spring 2015 Ext 6059

Today’s training After today’s training, you will be able to: 1.Know the SAU Mission for Academic Advising 2.Recognize institutional policies you need to to learn during year one of academic advising or how to obtain the information. 3.Locate information on our website pertaining to academic advising. 4.Value the Advisor-Advisee as a relationship in the teaching learning environment.

Teaching and Learning Louis Schmier “Pronouncements that “I care about students” is the lofty ideal. Unconditional “caring” for each student in the classroom each day is the down-to-earth real thing.” – Use our Campus Resource People: SSC, Academic Advising Office, Career Center, Registrar, Retention Office

Another Schmier quote “As we think about nurturing or weeding out a student, we should never forget that we’re also nurturing or weeding out his/her future sons and daughters.” Students come to you at times that may or may not be convenient for you. Students may need guidance on alternative career paths. Lack of success in a class is an opportunity to engage in a deeper conversation about goals, interests and abilities.

Academic Advising Mission Academic advisors partner with students to: develop, evaluate, empower, support, and actively engage in their education, career, and life goals

Advisor Responsibilities Advisors frequently want to know what basic information do they need to know. Once you learn the basic information, you will be in a better role to serve as an academic advisor.

Informational Component – Institutional knowledge of policies and procedures Records/Registration website. – Calendar for year » Difference of “not showing on transcript,” “W” and WP/WF – Transfer course equivalency – Grading scheme – FERPA – Beeline – Catalog – Lots more information on this site

Informational Component Continued Information Technology – Beeline Information – ion-Resources/Beeline_Training_Faculty.pdf All Users Students Faculty – Advising Information Specific – Very helpful and useful. Can watch a video or read a PDF.

Information Continued Academic Advising Blackboard – Contains Advisor handbook – Core Values of advising, Ethical foundations – Some policies and SAU procedures – Two-year sequence – FERPA information – Articles about academic advising – Theories of advising – New information posted on a regular basis – Advisors are informed through this blackboard site

Information General Education and Major Requirements – Fr. Bud and Gen Ed committee present several times per year on General Education. – Know requirements for majors in your area – Institutional Requirements Integrative learning component. Seek knowledge from your academic department chair, faculty representative on General Education or Fr. Bud.

Advisor Responsibilities cont. Be able to articulate the academic and professional benefits of a liberal arts education Understand how to develop a realistic educational plan that is consistent with interest, skills and abilities. Create a degree/graduation plan

Progression toward Degree We want students to graduate in 4 years! – Assist them in developing/revising and updating their 4 year plan. – Gain knowledge about our resources Advising Center, Career Center, Student Success Center, Counseling Center, Nurse Nancy’s office, etc. – Students need to take approximately 15 credits per semester or 30 per year (or more) depending on major.

Communication Learn how to guide an advising session Ensure you are answering the student’s questions. Establish expectations- – Making/keeping appointments -Inform them of what to bring to appointment (program eval., selection of classes, look up pre-requisites) This is a teaching and learning environment. For example, it is ok to give homework and expect them to complete it (visit career counselor, review certain websites, complete observation hours, draft a plan of study).

Where do I learn more about advising? The National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) is a valuable resource for information regarding advising. The NACADA home website is Summer Orientation- – 5 events in June. You observe a faculty advisor for as long as needed to gain knowledge of first-policies and procedures (such as why first-year students cannot take 300 level classes). – Learn how to communicate to 18 year olds (just completing high school).

Next Steps Consider what additional type of training you want/need. Inform me and if we do not already offer it, we’ll find ways to offer it. Questions?
