Georgia Library Media Wiki Andy Spinks Supervisor of Library Media Education Cobb County School District

What is a wiki? A website in which the pages are created and maintained by the users of the site. An online system for collecting and organizing information, where the content is contributed by the users, not just the owners/managers of the site. A collaborative knowledge management system.

Wiki Facts “Wiki” is an Hawaiian word for “quick.” Wikipedia, the user-created online encyclopedia, is the most well-know example of a wiki. Most wikis have a narrow focus. –Wikipedia is an exception to this rule. Wikis are only as good as their contributors. –Users contribute all of the content. –Users do all of the maintenance & organization.

Why a Georgia LM Wiki? No individual has time to maintain an exhaustive collection of everything a library media specialist might want to know. A wiki can be used to collect & organize “unofficial” professional knowledge, opinions, and advice. The GeorgiaMedia distribution list has proven the power of the collective knowledge of our state LM community. The purpose of the GaLM Wiki is to collect and organize all that knowledge in a form that is easy to search and reference.
