Background 48 state consortium developing rigorous, K-12 Common Core Standards in English Language Arts and Math. Delaware is participating.

Goal: Orientation Plan Familiarize teachers, specialists, administrators with the… Common Core Standards Delaware Prioritized Curriculum

Plan Overview Participants will… Receive and overview of the Delaware Prioritized Curriculum(DPR) & Common Core State Standards (CCSS); Learn where to access them; Become familiar with the general format of the Delaware Prioritized Curriculum and Common Core Standards; Become familiar with the impact of the DPR…on the new DCAS state assessment. Explore next steps relating to the DPR…for planning the upcoming years teaching and learning. Take time to craft a presentation back in your districts.

Orientation Plan Two Components Component 1 (online) – 2 hours. Component 2 - (3 hours total for Secondary teachers; 6 hours total for Elementary teachers) Done after component 1 a deeper discussion of the standards within each assessed content area.

Objectives: Component 2 Participants will explore the impact of the Delaware Prioritized Curriculum and the Common Core State Standards on teaching and learning. Participants will work through guided activities using their own district/charter schools curricula to examine any possible changes in the level of student expectations. Special attention on the Common Core State Standards in English Language Arts and Mathematics will be featured. Participants will review and discuss the learning expectations in their grade level and the adjacent grades or courses to ensure vertical articulation.

Train the Trainer Timeline Trainers (you) offer similar professional development back in your district. To be completed by the end of the first semester (no later than January 31).

Social Studies and the Common Core Standards History/Social Studies standards appears in Reading and Writing grades 6-12 (see handout). Social Studies is deferring attention to the Common Core standards to our Language Arts colleagues.

Rationale for Deferring Overlap: The substantive standards are addressed in our history standards (e.g. Distinguished fact from opinion…in a text;). Grade Placement: Some CCSS that appear in high school are addressed in Delaware at earlier grades (e.g. identify authors point of view or purpose; evaluate authors differing points of view on the same historical event). Need for Focus: student achievement in social studies recommends focused attention on the Delaware (tested) standards.

Big Idea I for Delaware Social Studies Teachers Delaware Prioritized Curriculum Not Common Core State Standards.

Big Idea II for Delaware Social Studies Teachers Delaware Prioritized Curriculum and Delaware Recommended Curriculum are different labels for the same thing.

Focus: Component 2 Social Studies Training Helping teachers/districts/schools understand the Delaware Prioritized Curriculum and its implications for curriculum, planning, instruction, assessment etc.

Activity: Scavenger Hunt Stage 1 Needed Clarification Document for Civics Benchmark cutouts in envelope. Colored paper: 1 of each = pink (K-3), green (4-5), yellow (6-8), blue (9-12). Label each with the designated grade cluster (e.g. K-3). Read each sentence strip (benchmark statement). Determine the grade cluster in which it is prioritized according to the Clarification Document. Write that grade cluster on the benchmark strip then... Place the benchmark strip on the colored paper that represents the cluster in which it is prioritized according to the Clarification Document.

Activity: Scavenger Hunt Stage 2 Needed Clarification Document for Civics Benchmark cutouts in envelope. Colored paper: pink (4 = K-3), green (3 = 4-5), yellow (3 = 6-8), blue (3 = 9-12). Write grade numbers at the top of each colored paper (e.g. Grade K on a pink paper, Grade 1 on a different pink paper, Grade 4 on a green paper etc.). Take the benchmark strips that you just placed in the appropriate grade cluster and place each one on the exact grade in which it is currently taught in your district.

Problem Identification 1. Look at the Document entitled Delaware Recommended Curriculum for Social Studies K-7 Benchmarks by Grade Level for DCAS. 2. Compare and contrast your districts scope and sequence to determine IF there are any benchmarks being taught after they are scheduled to be tested under DCAS. 3. Slide any such benchmark slightly to the side of the grade level (colored) paper on which it is currently taught. See any problem that has to be addressed.
