Bio Grading Unit 1 Objectives & Science Practices

Properties of Life Gallery Walk (CO 1.1) Sketch the following table into your notebook Spend 1 minute at EACH station and complete table Work with tablemate ObjectIs it Alive? Was it Alive?Reasoning 1. alsdjfa;lsdjf asldfkjasl;fj

Properties of Life...continued! (CO 1.1) With your table group, discuss your findings On your whiteboard, come up with a list of characteristics that you used to classify the objects as living

Properties of Life (CO 1.1)

Growth Growth = an increase in the number of new cells

Organization Living things have certain parts that perform certain functions Ex: We are organized into systems (nervous, digestive, circulatory) Each part has a specific function!

Homeostasis Homeostasis = the ability to maintain a stable internal environment no matter what the external environment is like Ex: temperature, pH, water balance

Evolution/Adaptation Adaptations: any structure or behavior that allows an organism to survive better over the long term – Ex: desert plants can survive in the hot and dry weather because they have adaptations like shallow roots and no leaves

Metabolism The sum of all of the chemical reactions in an organism. Living things need and use energy to survive

Response Living things can RESPOND to STIMULI Stimulus = anything that causes a physical or psychological response

Reproduction Living things are able to make more of their own species Species: a group of organisms that can interbreed and produce fertile offspring

Acronym: GO HAM RR (go hammer?)

Do for the next class… Exit slip on 1.1 next class Reading handout: ch of life/ answer q

next day

exit slip minutes ☺ Please put it in the bin when you are done.

Levels of Organization RACE!!! (CO 1.2) On the board are 2 columns with #1 will represent the smallest level of organization & 12 the largest. In the box in front you will find the names of the organizational levels. Your group task is to be the 1 st to have all of the organizational levels in the correct order.

RULES Each person in the group must go up 1x before people can repeat. ONLY 1 person per team in front Everyone must be seated! The next player can go up as soon as the person before them sits down. NO RUNNING!!!! You may walk briskly. Please be careful ☺ When it is your turn you can ONLY DO 1 THING either… – Put a level up where you think it belongs. OR – Correct something you think is wrong. You can sort through the bin to look at the different cards Your team can help you from their seats by shouting

When your team feels like your answer is completed and correct you must all be seated & put your hands up. The game will pause for a moment & I will let that team know if they are correct or not. If they are not, then the game resumes…

Handout: levels of organization Biology covers an enormous amount of information so we organize it. Sidebar: The blue whale is the largest living individual organism on Earth EVER (including bigger then the biggest dinosaur, be impressed) We also study organisms relationships to: each other, other organisms, their non-living environment & as an entire planet. su/powersof10/index.html Cool zoom in from universe to quarkhttp://micro.magnet.fsu.edu/primer/java/scienceoptic su/powersof10/index.html AstroBiology!

LoO worksheet (CO 1.2) 1st you will determine the definition of each of the levels using the matching game. In the clip are the definitions of the words & examples. Match them to the vocabulary word and call me over to check. Once that is complete come up with examples of each at your table. Check in with me when you are done.

HW 1.fill in the LOO table.

EM posters

EM Game

The whole has different characteristics than the parts on their own.

Key Point Characteristics emerge as organization becomes more complex BUT don’t exist below that level. The level you focus on will give you a different perspective vs. another level.

Emergent property example 1 Elemental Characteristics Vs Compound characteristics

Emergent Property: example 2 Molecule

emergent properties activity with squares Activity with tables and paper

HW 1.fill in the LOO table.
