Chapter 1 Biology: The Study of Life Section 1 What is Life?

What is Biology?  Study of Life

What is life?

Is it Alive?  For each video, make observations of the object in the video in order to determine if it is living or non-living.  Record these observations in Table 1 of your minilab.  Then, decide if the object is living or nonliving and write down the reasons why you came to this conclusion in the table.

Organism  Anything that possesses all of the characteristics of life.

What are the Characteristics of Life?

All Living Things Have:  Orderly Structure –Composed of one or more cells. –Each cell has all genetic material needed to control life processes.

All Living Things Have:  Ability to Reproduce –Species: Group of organisms that can interbreed and produce fertile offspring.

All Living Things Have:  Growth and Development –Increase in the amount of living material. –Formation of new structures.

All Living Things Have:  Need to use energy –Organisms receive energy from food.  Plants – Make their own food.  Animals, fungi, and others – Get food from plants or from other organisms which consume plants.

All Living Things Have:  Ability to adjust to changes in their environment. –Stimulus: Anything in the external or internal environment that causes the organism to react. –Response: Reaction to a stimulus.

All Living Things Have:  Ability to adjust to changes in their environment. –Homeostasis: Regulation of an organism’s internal environment in order to maintain conditions suitable for survival.

All Living Things Have:  Ability to adjust to changes in their environment. –Adaptation  Any structure, behavior or internal process that enables an organism to respond to environmental factors and produce offspring.  Adaptations are inherited from previous generations.  Organisms with more suitable adaptations are more likely to survive and reproduce.

Is it Alive?  Now that you know the characteristics of life, watch each video again…  This time, list in Table 2 each characteristic of life that is exhibited by the object.  Then, decide if the object is living or nonliving.

Conclusions?  As we decide if each object is living or nonliving, think about criteria that is not evident in the video that you might need to know in order to decide if the object is alive.  Then answer the following question in your minilab:  Could you always decide if something was alive if you could only see a photo of it? Why or why not?
