Course of Study By Isaac Kennedy

Assessment and Communications in Nursing Introduced to the nursing process. Learned about history of nursing. Introduced to communicating between the client and nurse.

Foundations and Nursing Interventions Introduced on how to therapeutically communicate with clients. Did INTERPERSONAL PROCESS RECORDING to evaluate own communication patterns. Started learning several basic nursing skills and practiced them in the nursing lab. Learned the importance of controlling and preventing disease, and limiting there spread by proper hand washing. Began to learn how to assess a client from head to toe. Helped clients with activities of daily living.

Health care of children Learned how to properly assess a child. Gained knowledge on normal childhood development, to compare children in each stage to ensure they are developing at a normal rate. Learned how to calculate children's medications by the child's weight. Worked with children in the clinical setting with a variety of chronic and acute diseases.

Parent and newborn nursing Worked closely with mothers and there newborns to ensure that the mother and infant were bonding appropriately. Assessed a new born using the Ballard score and learned different ways to assess. Mothers postpartum. Gained experience in the operating room while observing a mother having a caesarian section.

Gerontology/ Rehab Nursing Worked with clients in an extended care facility. Continued to learn about medications and there effects while administering medications to these clients. Gave medications via PEG tub. Assessed clients from head to toe and worked with clients suffering with cognitive impairments. Worked with wound care nurse to gain experience with wound vac and dressing changes.

Nursing of adults. Gained much experience with Intravenous Pumps and administering medications through them, including IVPB and IVP. Gave medications in sub coetaneous and intramuscular injection as well as orally. Learned about the affect that chronic diseases have on clients, how to assess for them, and how to treat the conditions even if it is palliative care.

Professional Nursing Development Gained knowledge on how to be a healthcare professional. Learned how to create an effective resume, and how to properly search for employment. Created a professional portfolio. Prepared and gave a lecture on nursing burnout and the importance of avoiding it.

Leadership and management Learned how to properly manage a healthcare team, and how to appropriately delegate tasks to the team members. Worked on an oncology floor in the hospital where I got many new experiences to include: administering blood and platelets, and removing a JB tube. Took on a full nursing assignment of five patients and learned how to complete all tasks in a timely manner.

Community Health Nursing Followed the nursing process while assessing a community for its strengths and weaknesses. Collaborated with other healthcare professionals to find weaknesses in the community. Addressed the community weaknesses and came up with nursing diagnosis to help them. Worked with other students to educate the student population on healthcare resources that are available to them.

Psych/Mental Health Nursing Gained knowledge on a variety mental disorders, learned how to recognize a client suffering from one, and how to properly treat them. It is important that nurses do there therapies based on research and evidence based. I researched an appropriate intervention for these clients and found evidence that suggests that art therapy is a an effective intervention to help clients creatively express themselves as well as, help the nurse assess the client because clients can draw what is unconscious. Also art therapy can serve as a helpful toll in letting healthcare professionals know the current mood of each client. After the research finding, a classmate and I designed and held an art therapy session.

Senior Experience Goals Continue to perfect nursing skills, and the use of the nursing process. Gain more knowledge about the physiological changes that patients go through for there specific diagnosis and the treatments for each. Gain experience working with critically ill patients and the interventions they require.

N40010 Caring for the critically ill Competencies: Worked with a client on a ventilator, arterial line, central line, PICC, PEG tube, NG tube, multiple IV’s, multiple system failure. Patient teaching: Taught diabetic client the importance of blood glucose control, as well as the importance of adhering to there diet. Evidence based practice: Used the ventilator bundle to try to prevent VAP.

N40010 Caring for the critically ill Personal reflection of experience: I got to work with several clients who were admitted for different diagnosis. I got to see critical patients who were very unstable. I used many of my nursing skills throughout clinical, and got an idea of the workload that these patients require. Overall I think this clinical prepared me to recognize a declining patient, and have an idea of the challenges that I will someday face when a client becomes unstable.
