PESTLE Introduction – how do these factors affect your Chief Directorate? Political Economic Social Technological Legislative Environmental

Vision and Strategy Financial Internal Business Processes Learning and Growth Customer Strategic Themes in the Context of the Balanced Score Card perspectives To succeed financially how should we appear to our stakeholders? To satisfy our stakeholders and customers, what business processes must we excel at? To achieve our vision, how will we sustain our ability to learn, change and improve? To achieve our vision, how should we appear to our customers?

High Road and Low Road High RoadLow Road The perfect company – describe it! The vision; how would it look? How would it work? What would the culture be like? You wouldn’t be able to work! What would be missing? What would be wrong with the company? What would the culture be like? Would you still be relevant? Why not?

SWOT Analysis Strengths WeaknessesThreats Opportunities Core Capabilities Key Risks What are these?

To Be Now February 2015Strategy Workshop11 ActivitiesRecipients Last three things…. ActivitiesRecipients Roadmap

Action Plan Business Objectives must be SMART! Specific – target a specific area for improvement; must be a specific area of focus. Measurable – quantify or at least suggest an indicator of progress and/or success. Assignable – specify who will do it. Realistic – state what results can realistically be achieved, given available resources; can this be done? Time-related – specify when the result(s) will be achieved.

Action Plan All objectives need to be SMART and map both to the Balanced Score Card and three focus areas…….. Growth & Sustainability Good Corporate Citizenship Compliance S.M.A.R.T. Business Objectives

Quick exercise… 1.How do you put a giraffe in a fridge? 2.How do you put an elephant in a fridge? 3.The Lion King is hosting an animal conference. All the animals attend the conference, except one. Which animal doesn’t attend? 4.There is a river you must cross, but it is inhabited by fierce crocodiles. How do you solve the problem?

Riddle You are driving in your car and you see there are three people at a bus stop: Your best friend, a sick old lady in need of hospital care and the woman of your dreams, whom you may never see again. Its pouring with rain and you only have room for one more person in your car. Who do you take?

What you said after day one…. I can see the whole picture of the department This function is very complex There are many challenges, and we won’t solve them all, but we can find simple solutions We will be able to bite in small chunks Debate on independence arouses a lot of thought We are more prepared and empower ed for tomorro w We need to walk around the elephant to see how big it us before we start to eat it in small chunks I buy into the idea of a strategy with an end in mind We are building at the foundation level while we are trying to install windows at the same time

Working together…..
