Work What is work? Is the product of force and distance. When a force acts on an object in the direction the object moves. Some of the force has to cause.

REVIEW Work Power and Machines. What Is Work? Key Concepts  Work is done on an object when the object moves in the same direction in which the force.
Mechanical Advantage The measurement of how useful a machine is to the job.
Work, scientifically speaking, is done on an object when a force is applied to move it a certain distance. IMPORTANT! The distance (displacement) in this.

A View From Around the Neighborhood Simple Machines A View From Around the Neighborhood

Directions As you go through the slides, there will be places to stop and visit. Click on the links and go through the activity. When you are done with the activity, fill in your paper. Then return to the next slide by closing the window.

Meet the Neighbors You will be traveling through this virtual field trip to learn a bit about the six types of simple machines.

The Neighbors: Levers Pulleys Wheel and axle Inclined plane Wedge Screw

The Neighbors’ Background At this first stop, you will see some examples of the six simple machines. Click on each to get a definition. Pay attention, there is an online quiz at the end. Don’t worry. You’ll do fine. “http://www.coe.uh.edu/archive/science/science_lessons/scienceles1/finalhome.htm” Be sure your paper is filled in for this section and then go onto the next slide.

More Time with Pulleys, Levers and Wheel and Axle Now that you’ve gotten an overview of each of the six simple machines, let’s spend a bit more time with them. You’ll be locating three simple machines specifically.

More Time with Pulleys, Levers and Wheel and Axle At this stop, you will go through the town and locate pulleys, levers and wheel and axles in use. Follow directions and click on each that you see. The colored dots will fill in so you know how many you still need to find. Remember you can move around and up and down in the town.

More Time with Pulleys, Levers and Wheel and Axle Don’t forget to close out of the site to return here when you are done. “http://www.harcourtschool.com/activity/machines/simple_machines.htm” Fill in your paper if you did not already and then go on to the next slide.

Neighborhood Open House Welcome to a typical house in the neighborhood. It could be your house. Go through the rooms with your host and find all of the simple machines that are “hidden” in the home. If you are feeling good about your progress and have a few extra minutes to spare, go visit the shed as well.

Neighborhood Open House Like our other stops before: 1. Click on the site 2. Fill out your paper 3. Close the site and come back here. http://www.edheads.org/activities/simple-machines

The Advantage of Simple Machines You’ve seen examples of the different simple machines, gotten a definition, found some alone and in combination with others. Now it is time to try to get the best advantage from them.

The Advantage of Simple Machines In this next site, you’ll be helping complete a few tasks. But more than that, you’ll be trying to complete the tasks using the least amount of effort. This site is not so easy and you do get to try things a few times, so hang in there.

The Advantage of Simple Machines Go to the site and follow directions by starting at the introduction to help Pic and Harry. Do each item in the menu. Fill out your paper. Come back here when you are done by closing the window. http://sunshine.chpc.utah.edu/javalabs/java12/machine/index.htm

Challenge Time If you are ready for a challenge and you thought the last site was WAY too easy, travel back to ancient Egypt and help build a pyramid with the least effort. If you are mentally exhausted by the last site, you may want to take a peak at the next one anyway.

Challenge and Done Challenge task: http://scifiles.larc.nasa.gov/kids/Problem_Board/problems/pulleys/sim1.html Now that you are done, write one last comment on your paper.
