Simple Machines Know all the simple machines, their individual parts, examples and definitions. Refer to the PowerPoint and to the Simple but Tough notes.

How Machines Make Work Easier PowerPoint 1. They can change the amount of force required; wedge, lever, wheel & axle, Pulley 2. They can change the distance over which the force is exerted; inclined plane, screw, lever, wheel & axle 3. They can change the direction of the input force; pulley, lever

Work Simple machines DO NOT change the amount of work done. From PowerPoint

More Work For work to be done, what things must happen? (PowerPoint) 1. Force must be applied 2. Object must move some distance as a result of the force applied 3. Force applied must be in the same direction as the motion of the object

SI Units Refer to the Calculating Work worksheet Each unit was on the board Force is measured in Newtons Distance is measured in Meters Work is measured in Joules One joule is equal to one Newton-Meter

Calculating Work Refer to the Calculating Work worksheet We worked all 6 problems together on the board, so you should have detailed notes on how to solve these.

Forces and Simple Machines Notes If you don’t have yours, refer to the downloads for the first six weeks. They are dated 9/14.

Gizmos and StemScopes I would try to answer the 5 questions that go with the Gizmo we did in the computer lab. I would also finish the Gizmo if you haven’t. I would log in to StemScopes and try the 3 practice quizzes, keeping in mind that this test is over simple machines and work ONLY, not the life science questions.

Vocabulary Be sure you can define each of the words in the vocabulary list. For simple machines, be sure you can list examples of each as well.
