User guide for Muon shifter part 2 : control of LV, HV, TELL1 Preliminary version 9-July-08 (written by Michela) HV part updated by Oleg Maev 4-November-09

LV control For any problem: contact M.Lenzi/O.Maev/G.Passaleva To control LV you should: Log on into lbts.cern.ch PC (online interface to the rest of the world) From lbts you make a remote desktop connection to computer UI01 On UI01 you should look into 'MyComputer' going trough G: -> online -> ecs -> muon -> Shortcuts38->ProjectName Then you click on the shortcut of the pvss project you need (LV side A or C, depending on what you want to do).

LV control PVSS project Developer: M. Lenzi To start/stop pvss project please read the instructions at The PVSS project has its FSM and to control anything you need, first of all, to 'take' privileges.... Then you can navigate the panels trough the Quadrant and stations that you need to work on.

Maraton issues Experts: M. Lenzi, P. Ciambrone. For any hardware problem please contact P.Ciambrone. Sometimes the Maraton goes into a funny state: it shows errors that are unlikely to be real hardware failures. In those cases you should carefully check : - that the OPC server is running correctly and the RCM is talking communicating correctly - that the communication btw the RCM and the Maraton is correct OPC server restart can be done only with administrator privileges (ask M. Lenzi) To exit from real funny situation the following chain of actions has proved to help: turn off PVSS and OPC server Reboot RCM crate Restart PVSS and OPC server Poer cycle the Maraton After each step you need to check that the communication is going as expected. Latest maraton known problem: last november! Since then everything is running smoothly.

How to start/stop pvss projects for HV, LV and Tell1 All the projects have been configured as services, so that they will start automatically (included the FSM) after a reboot of the machine. If you want to start/stop manually: (all projects run as muon_oper and all the muon group has the permissions to start/stop projects) 1. You can start/stop/restart project in the respective Project_Console: Go to the folder: G:\online\ecs\Shorcuts38\Muon\ProjectName and open ProjectName_Console. 2. The other way do it directly on machine where project runs. For windows projects (MULVA01, MULVC01, MUHVA02, MUHVC02): 1) login using your account on the machine where the project runs 2) open the service+ tool panel 3) - to start the project: start the service ProjectName (e.g. MUHVA02) - to stop the project: start the service ProjectName-Stop (e.g. MUHVA02- Stop). Please, do not stop the project by stopping the service ProjectName (use ProjectName-Stop to stop it cleanly). 4) log off from the machine and take the control of the project using the shortcut to the project from the machine UI01

Instructions to start/stop pvss projects for HV, LV and Tell1 for linux projects (MUDAQL1): 1) login using your account on the machine where the project runs 2) to start the project: type the command sudo /sbin/service pvss_mp start - to stop the project: type the command sudo /sbin/service pvss_mp stop 3) log off from the machine and take the control of the project using the shortcut to the project from the machine UI01 For linux HV PNPI projects (MUHVA01, MUHVC01): a special script has to be used to start/stop the PNPI system, included the hvcard driver and Dim server (be sure that HV Primary power supplies are on): 1) login using your account on the machine where the project runs and go in the directory /localdisk/pvss 2) to start: execute the script./startPNPI to start the hostcard driver, the dim server and the pvss project or execute the script./startDimPVSS to start only dim server and pvss project. - wait and be patience for a few minutes until you get the message "PNPI system initialization finished" - to stop: execute the script./stopPNPI to stop the hostcard driver, the dim server and the pvss project or execute the script./stopDimPVSS to stop only dim server and pvss project. Note: in order to avoid the system problems, before running of any "start" script, be clearly sure that all related processes are really not running! Best way to check it – to run the stopping scripts first. 3) log off from the machine and take the control of the project from UI01 see and for more detailed instructions.

HV system operation Recipes have been stored in the Configuration DB and can be applied sending FSM commands: Go_STANDBY1, Go_STANDBY2 and Go_READY. Also commands Go_OFF, Go_ON, SET_V0, SET_Imax, Reset and Do_Emergency_OFF can be apply. To load recipe you must send command --- Load and type the name (COSMICS or PHYSICS) of recipe. Do it from the top panel only and for all four projects! COMMANDVset, (V) Imax, (  A) 1Gap/HV ch Imax, (  A) 4Gaps/HV ch Ramp up speed, V/s Go_STANDBY Go_STANDBY Go_READY (COSMICS) Go_READY (PHYSICS) CAEN & PNPI controls are unified in a single control structure. You can operate either separate project or from the common console with both projects. For the Master-boards of the UF/PNPI system settings are fixed: Vset=2900V, Imax=400  A, ramp up speed -20V/s

HV system operation Status of the system: At present, there are following indicators of the status of HV on Muon system: OFF – system is off, it means a zero voltage on MWPCs, CAENs and on all of UF/PNPI HV-modules, but MATSUSADA (Primary PS of PNPI) can still be on. Ramping – indicates that voltage on system is changing at this moment. NOT_READY – there is some nonzero voltage on the system, but it is unequal to the recipes settings (STANDBY_1, STANDBY_2 or READY) ERROR -- system came in error state, usually it means just a trip somewhere or indicates that CAEN SY1527 is fully off. DEAD -- it means FSM cannot communicate with the whole system or with a part of one for some reason. The first action in this case must be restarting FSM. STANDBY_1, STANDBY_2 or READY – it means that whole system came to the values set by corresponding recipes.

HV system operation MATSUSADA remote control As distinct from CAEN SY1527, UF/PNPI HV Primary power supplies (MATSUSADAs) aren't controlled through PVSS panels and must be operated on the local machines, MUHVA01 and MUHVC01. Ramping of HV on them must be very careful, because they are absolutely independent from the ESC at present! Usually they are permanently on but you have to recover them after every power cut on D3, DSS –alarm (water leak) or rebooting these PCs after upgrade of SW, etc. 1.Before ramping up HV on MATSUSADAs check that the UF/PNPI HV-system is really off through PVSS. If you are not sure in it or you aren’t able to check it, the ramping speed must be not higher than 5V/s! 2.login using your account on one of the related machine by PUTTY and go in the directory /group/muon/hvcalib 3.Set the environment variable and PATH variable by executing: hvcalib>. calibenv 4. Control the Matsusada by command: hvcalib> hvPrimeCtrl –v2800 –u5 –e –r where keys mean v-voltage, u-ramping speed, e-leave external control after exit and r-reset. 5.You will see the monitor with status of power supply. 6.Exit from the program by pressing Ctrl-C combination on the terminal keyboard. 7.Repeat the procedure described above on the second machine.

1.Login on UI01 (windows) machine in the LHCb online cluster. Matsusadas must be ramped to the nominal voltages in advance (2800V), see previous page. 2.Go to folder G:\online\ecs\Shortcuts38\MUON\MUHVC02 and double click on MUHVC02_UI_FSM. The panel in Figure will appear. 3.Right-click on MUONC_HV Instructions how to operate the whole HV system using PVSS project (C-side example):

Note: red locks mean that somebody else has the control: you can monitor the status but you cannot operate the system Please remember to release the control (ReleaseAll) when you don’t need it anymore 4. Take the control of the project

On main panel you have several options: Status and control of CAEN 48V PS Status of DIM server of CAEN system Status of DIM server of PNPI system Here you can include/exclude PNPI and GEM For experts only (please contact expert before using)

In next step you must open PNPI project for the moment to switch on the PNPI modules: Go to folder G:\online\ecs\Shortcuts38\MUON\MUHVC02 and open MUHVC01_UI_FSM (PNPI project) Switch on modules by pressing this button

5. If you see that all things are OK (connections, Primary PS are on, no dead subsystems, etc.) switch on PNPIMASTERS with the command Go_READY. Be patient on every step. Let system to reach the stable state.

Master operational panel:

6. wait until the state of PNPI_MASTERS is STANDBY1 7. send the command Go_STANDBY1 to one quadrant, e.g. Q3

Quadrant monitoring panel:

Station monitoring panel:

8. Wait until the state of Quadrant is STANDBY1

9. Send the command Go_STANDBY1 to the next quadrant, e.g. Q4:

10. Wait until all quadrants are in state STANDBY1 11. Repeat the procedure from step 5 to step 10 for the commands Go_STANDBY2 and then Go_READY

Region monitoring panel:

Chamber monitoring panel: Vmon and IMon are stored in PVSS archive DB

General remarks: - Operate the system from UI01 machine: do not login on muhva01(c01) machines without reason. - Remember to release the control of the project before leaving - Be patient: when you send a command, wait until the command has been executed (and the FSM states have changed accordingly) before sending further commands - If you want to do more sophisticated operations, i.e. change recipe settings, change archive DB settings, run auto-detection procedure, save/load Id from Configuration DB, etc. please ask experts: do not try to do it by yourself before learning how to do it. - If you see some problems please contact experts so that they can investigate immediately (it is hard to reproduce and understand a problem the day after..)

Switch On/Off all boards - If you are not able to switch on channels, most of the times is because the boards are off (solution: click on “Switch on all modules”)

HV control (CAEN) CAEN & PNPI controls will be unified in a single control structure. Michela is working on this and will update the instruction file when this integration will be completed.
