Thyroid and Parathyroid Glands
Ch. 45 The Endocrine System The Body’s Long Distance Regulators.
Hypoparathyroidism By Katie Miller. Hypoparathyroidism endocrine disorder where parathyroid glands in the neck don’t produce enough parathyroid hormone.
Definition: Controls body processes by means of Chemicals.
PARATHYROIDS By Afra Nehal and Nida Madni LOCATION  Parathyroid glands are 4 small glands of the endocrine system which are embedded in posterior surface.
Hyperparathyroidism.
Organization and Homeostasis
The thyroid gland is located in the lower part of the neck and is partially wrapped around the trachea (windpipe). It has two lobes that are joined together.

Produce the parathyroid hormone Four small glands Found in the neck behind thyroid gland Each gland is about the size of a grain of rice PARATHYROID GLANDS

 Raises the calcium level in the blood, which keeps the body functioning normally  Peptide chain Ways Parathyroid Raises the Calcium Level: 1.Breaking down bone to release calcium 2.Helps the body absorb calcium from food 3.Increase the kidney’s ability to retain calcium FUNCTION OF THE HORMONE

 The thyroid gland is similar to a thermostat  Maintains a strict level of calcium in the blood  If the calcium level is too low, the hormone is produced  If the calcium level gets too high, the hormone stops NEGATIVE FEEDBACK

More common in women Usually only one gland is diseased, but up to all four can be hyperactive Effects: Weakened bones Kidney stones How to cure it? HYPERPARATHYROIDISM

 Usually only occurs from removal of parathyroid glands. Effects:  Brittle hair  Dry hair and skin  Cramps  Weakened tooth enamel HYPOPARATHYROIDISM
