AccessABILITY Resource Services Faculty Training Requesting Accommodations in College

The AccessABILITY Resource Services office works in partnership with students with disabilities, faculty and staff to remove barriers in the educational process through design and accommodation. We recognize disability as an aspect of diversity and promote a culture of inclusion for all diverse groups.

What you didn’t know you didn’t know about the AccessABILITY office… 0 Students must self-disclose and request accommodations every semester. 0 New students do not know what “accommodations” are. 0 What is a considered a disability? 0 Auxiliary aids in the classroom are not optional.

Types of Auxiliary Aids 1.Notes/Note taker 2.Scribe 3.Reader 4.Alternative Text 5.Sign Language Interpreter 6.Tactile slides 7.Laptop/iPad

Auxiliary aids are not… Personal Aides Supplemental instructors Tutors Mentors Auxiliary aids are tools for access For example: Scribe = smart pencil Interpreter = communication device

Finding a Note Taker 0 Is a note taker needed in your class? Discuss with student. If not, let me know in writing. 0 Students may find a note taker themselves. 0 Maintain confidentiality – only note takers and instructors need to know who receives the notes. 0 Note Taker volunteers need to bring the form to AccessABILITY Resource Services to sign up

 If a note taker cannot be found in the classroom, students must contact the AccessABILITY Resource Services Coordinator in writing. ARS will provide a note taker within 5 working days after notification.  Some students are still learning how to be self-advocates so assistance from the instructor is helpful and appreciated. No Volunteer!?!
