Egyptian Social Structure: Most people belonged to the same social class as their parents, there was very little chances of moving up the social scale. Egyptians believed that their class system created a stable, well-ordered society because each group had a specific role to play. Women had more power than those of other ancient civilizations and could run businesses, own land and represent themselves in court.

Digging Deeper You and your group members are part of an archeological exploration in Ancient Egypt! You have the opportunity to investigate the specific roles of ONE social class. You will report your findings to your group members. Work quickly and carefully! You will only have 15 minutes to investigate!

The Afterlife: Weighing of the Souls – determines where you will go after you die. The Field of Offerings or the Underworld…

What is the importance of mummification? mummification.html …to preserve the body for the afterlife.

The Mummification Process It took a very long time, from start to finish, it took about 70 days to embalm a body. The priest in charge would wear the mask of a jackal, representing the god Anubis.

The Mummification Process 1. The body was washed and purified. 2. Organs were removed and placed in canopic jars. Only the heart remained.

The Mummification Process 3. The body was filled with stuffing. 4. The body was dried by covering it with a substance called natron, that absorbed all moisture from the body.

The Mummification Process 5. After days the stuffing was removed and replaced with linen or sawdust. 6. The body was wrapped in strands of linen and covered in a sheet called a shroud.

The Mummification Process 7. The body was placed in a stone coffin called a sarcophagus.
