XCRI-CAP eXchanging Course Related Information with associated Course Advertising Profile

XCRI-CAP is an information standard which specifies the structure and definitions of programme marketing information XCRI-CAP produces a live XML feed about programmes, available via a URL to outside users XCRI-CAP takes its information automatically from internal data sources, ensuring that it is up-to-date and accurate What is XCRI-CAP?

Promoted by JISC (used to be short for Joint Information Systems Committee) – ‘the UK’s expert on digital technology for education and research’ JISC ran an XCRI-CAP project Jan 2012 – Mar 2013 including 93 higher education institutions All signed up to producing a XCRI-CAP compliant XML feed of some or all of their programmes Where did the idea of XCRI-CAP come from?

Better information for prospective students – ‘Students at the heart of the system’ Data interoperability, i.e. to enable information to be shared efficiently between the computerised information systems – enter once use many times Efficiency Consistency Quality control Why adopt XCRI-CAP?

Course search websites Internal uses, e.g. links to the the HEAR (Higher Education Achievement Report) Potentially in the future: UCAS and other bodies needing programme information How will XCRI-CAP be used?

How did the University of Greenwich implement XCRI-CAP?

JISC XCRI-CAP feed manager: JISC demonstrator aggregator: University of Greenwich XML feed: What does an XCRI-CAP feed look like in practice?

Groundswell of adopters who took part in the JISC project – likely to become the de facto standard of programme information for marketing purposes Once taken up by course search websites, it will be a good way of advertising courses May be adopted by statutory bodies in due course University of Greenwich programmes taught in in partner colleges are already in the feed Can be used to drive internal improvements in programme information – efficiency, accuracy, quality assurance Why might partner colleges want to be aware of the XCRI-CAP initiative?
