9 The Great Commission Sequence  The Command to “make disciples” precedes “teaching them to obey”  “Only babies who have been born can be educated. … The church must indeed ‘teach them all things,’ but first she must have at least some Christians and some congregations.”

The Goal = Mature in Christ  “He is the one we proclaim, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone fully mature in Christ.” Colossians 1:28 The Evidence = Reproduction  Maturity is not measured by continual growth, but by the capacity and willingness to reproduce.

Focus and Method…  Focus = Biblical Discipleship… Disciples are not merely converts but also doers, learners, students, Christ followers, or better yet, “apprentices of Jesus.”  Method = Relationship Jesus invited people into relationships with himself; he loved them and in the process showed them how to follow God. His primary method was life-on-life. 16
