GCSE COMPUTING An Introduction

ICT vs Computing ICT How to use technology. Using computer software. “Behind the wheel.” Computing How technology works. Making computer software. “Under the bonnet.”

Why is Computing important? (2011)

Why is Computing important? (2012)

Why is Computing useful to me? An academic subject. Encourages logical thinking. Allows you to create (not just consume). A stepping-stone to a career with technology (and a useful skill in any other career). The next Mark Zuckerberg?

How is the course assessed? Grades awarded on GCSE scale (A* to G) Controlled Assessment 1 (30%): Practical Investigation Controlled Assessment 2 (30%): Programming Project 1hr30 Written Examination (40%): A mixture of short and long answer questions, some of which will require candidates to write program code.

What will we actually do? Learn the basics of computer programming by making computer games with Scratch

What will we actually do? Learn how to type written code in programming languages such as Basic (and maybe others)

What will we actually do? Learn how to use HTML, CSS and JavaScript to create interactive web pages (from typed code).

What will we actually do? Learn how to build a computer and get it working, and how to network several computers together

What will we actually do? Learn Computing theory such as counting in binary!

Practical Stuff Everyone will need a computer in lessons! Everyone will need specific software (free to install) & a copy of the electronic textbook (PDF). Seating will be arranged to help you learn best. You may or may not like this : ) Check your school regularly! Use of online tests to check progress (new!)
