The Lawyer “The Man of Law” “He rode but badly in a medley coat, Belted in a silken sash, with little bars, But of his dress no more particulars.” What chaucer is saying in the quote is that the lawyer is well dressed and that represents his place in the society triangle, right near the top…….. Explain outfit. Hat, sash, belt, robe, shoes. A character with money is not a very good thing in chaucers writing it could chategarize them as frauds and not doing good for society.

“A Sergeant of the Law” Wary Wise Full of rich and excellence Parvise is a lawyers meeting place. Wary and wise = a ranking lawyer who is noble and wise. Everybody went to him for their problems and he was not to speak a word about them. He was a trustworthy man in their society, but in the end he is a fraud and just doing it for the money and that’s all he cared about.

The All Knowing “All was fee simple to him, in effect, Wherefore his claims could never be suspect” Trustworthy Influential To him all his job was about taking peoples money. He acted like he was these peoples friends and was giving them great advice and fighting for them when really he didn’t care at all. He was one of the fakest people in their society but nobody knew it.

The Truth “Nowhere a man so busy of his class, And yet he seemed much busier than he was.” Fraud Self Centered This line is saying that the lawyer made himself seem as if he was so busy. Nobody in the upper class in this time worked hard so it made him stand out and look like he was something great when he wasn’t. he made himself greater then should have been and nobody saw it. The lawyer was a bad man and persuaded people out of their money for himself.

The Merchant “His boots were fastened rather elegantly”. He’s high in chaucers society

Merchant! “His spoke his notions out right pompously,” “Stressing the times when he had won, not lost.” The Merchant convinces everyone that he is an expert in finance but he is secretly horribly in dept. He wants people to think he is rich and a good merchant

The Merchant! “There was no one could say he was in debt” “So well he governed all his trade affairs With bargains and with borrowings and with shares” He is not actually rich but he pretends to be He borrows a lot of money so people think he is rich

Merchant! “Indeed, he was a worthy man withal, But, sooth to say, his name I can't recall” He is a worthy man and an exelent fellow
