Tips & tricks Search Engine Optimization

Search Engine Optimization Objective: Increase the popularity of the EUROCONTROL website in the search engines and directories Solution: Write « search engine friendly » web pages Steps: Choosing a good keyword to position How to use the keyword in your page Optimizing the META data of your page Optimizing images Optimizing Word & PDF documents

Search Engine Optimization Choosing a good keyword Example: Keyword should reflect the content Combination of two or three words OR a very specific word (e.g. EUROCONTROL) – dont choose generic words (e.g. safety) Only one keyword per page Use keyword suggestion tools of Overture and Google to be sure the keyword you choose is used by users in search engines Sandbox Sandbox

Search Engine Optimization How to use the keyword in your page Keyword should be in page Title and Chapter Title Level1 or Chapter Title Level2 Keyword should be in 1st and last paragraph of the page Keyword should be in bold (use ) Page content should contain min. 100 words Pay attention to the order, the location and the attributes of the keyword (gender, singular or plural) The navigation caption should contain the keyword Strive for a keyword presence percentage of 3 to 5% (measurable with tool

Search Engine Optimization Order, the location and the attributes of the keyword If possible repeat your keyword using feminine, plural or similar words (i.e. control, controller, controllers, controlled, controllable, controlling,… etc.) If your keyword consists out of more than one word, make sure to use them close or next to each other, respecting the order of the words (air traffic traffic air)

Search Engine Optimization Use of keyword in navigation caption and anchors keywords in anchors or navigation captions enhance the relevance of the target page for that keyword optimize your captions by limiting the words used as much as possible to the keyword only So: dont use anchors like More information or Click here, but use CEATS Press cuttings

Search Engine Optimization Optimizing the META data of your page TITLE tag: –To be filled in the META field called Title –Displayed in the top blue bar of your browser window –Used by search engines to display in the result page, first thing that users will see, so VERY important –Tips & Tricks: »should be different for each page »30 to 100 characters maximum or count 5 to 10 words »should summarize page content »preferably in lower case »search engines give more weight to the first words of the title »do not repeat the keyword too often »title should be one language only

Search Engine Optimization Optimizing the META data of your page DESCRIPTION meta: –To be filled in META field called Introduction –Search engines display the description in the search results –Tips & Tricks: »maximum of 130 characters »dont use Enter (line breaks) in the description »repeat the words used in the metadata »the description must be structured as a sentence and not as a succession of keywords

Search Engine Optimization Optimizing the META data of your page KEYWORD meta: –Automatically generated in META field called Subject –Search engines give minor attention to keywords, but still it is good to optimize them –Tips & Tricks: »separated by a comma, with a space after the comma »10 to 15 words maximum »dont repeat the same word more than twice »dont use Enter (line breaks) in the description »repeat the words used in the metadata »keyword should be as accurate as possible »place the keyword in the decreasing order of relevance »use also the keywords with spelling mistakes, in the plural or singular, in feminine or masculine, with or without accent

Search Engine Optimization Optimizing images Enter a description (including the keyword) in the ALT attribute – field called Alternate text

Search Engine Optimization Optimizing Word & PDF documents example: 13agenda.doc 13agenda.doc File name: optimise a document for the keyword Safety Regulation Commission for example, the name of the file should be: Safety-Regulation-Commission doc Properties: Microsoft Word allows inserting the following document properties: »a title: will be displayed in the result page on Google »a subject: content description »an author name: mention either the authors name or EUROCONTROL »Keywords Document content: most important, first sentence will be shown as a description on the search result page

Search Engine Optimization Optimizing Word & PDF documents example: 13agenda.doc 13agenda.doc Word files follow closely the optimisation rules for Web pages, so use bold, italics, hyperlinks to better position your documents Above guidelines obviously also help for optimising PDF, as they are usually generated from Word documents.

Search Engine Optimization More information (increase the popularity of the EUROCONTROL website in the search engines and directories) dard_page/sep_intro.html Vade-mecum Focuses on content changes or adaptations that need to be brought to the EUROCONTROL website pages in order to increase their search engine friendliness. Tips & Tricks Choosing a keyword, writing your text around the chosen keyword, optimising META data,…

1.Chapter titles level 1 and 2 are too similar > This has been implemented Review of work performed since last meeting

2.It has been agreed to remove the 9 links in the header from all sub sites. They will be kept on the homepage, and if possible in the corporate branch. > This has been implemented: Review of work performed since last meeting

1.We know that white spaces and other non-alphabetic characters in filenames are not always compatible between Windows and Unix. Since our Web servers are Unix, great care must be taken. The templating system imposes that the filename of DCR are composed of [a-zA-Z0-A_]. Good. Could we improve the template system to impose the same check on all filenames e.g. images, documents,.... (files in the gallery - Imported files) This will avoid a number of broken links. Review of change proposals on Library template

2.The use of bold and italic should be allowed. At least in the Description field. 3.In the SRC system, there is no distinction between Internal and External Code, there is just one Document Reference or Identifier (e.g. ESARR 2, EAM 2/GUI 4). Displaying either Internal or External Code in a Library list is therefore confusing. Could it be changed to accommodate a field simply called "Document Reference" or "Document Identifier"? > Please use the Free Label and Free Text fields Review of change proposals on Library template

4.There should be the possibility to link to library elements maintained in other branches 5.When you rename a library category in site preferences, you have to manually propagate the change to all the library DCRs of that category. Not user friendly if you have a library with hundreds of documents. 6.Could we extend the new search with the following possibilities: Search per sub-site Search only the library of a certain sub-site Review of change proposals on Library template

7.It would be nice to be able to create a short version of the library. Example : A document is published every month. The subject is the same (e.g. monthly billing report). These documents can be published under a unique header. This saves space on your page. Review of change proposals on Library template

8.Would it be possible to arrange this template so that instead of the standard pdf icon which appears in the beginning of the separate documents of the library, there is a possibility to insert (optionally) a small picture, representing e.g. the coversheet of the document concerned. > Using the "Thumbnail" you can add one image per library item. Review of change proposals on Library template

9.There is a need (for Provisional Council) to have multiple libraries in one branch with different access groups. This need is understood to extend the granularity of security for the access to information and can be used for other purposes than provisional council Users would be able to indicate, in the Site preferences of their branch, for each library list, which access group should have access (at and after creation). As a result a HTML page is created for each library list specified in the Site preference template, containing all embedded library items of a particular group. Those pages could be accessed only by the members of the associated group. Review of change proposals on Library template

10.Library lists can be ordered on different parameters of the library item. However we need to be able to order user documents in a specific order. A solution is to place numbers in front of the titles. An option should exist to have the list of library items appear in non ordered sequence i.e. in the order they were originally placed. Review of change proposals on Library template

Other change proposals and process changes 1.Currently when we delete a DCR we have no means to find pages that possibly link to this page. This brings many broken links. Previously using Macromedia Dreamweaver, the tool prompted us with broken links when we deleted a page. Awaiting the implementation of a tool in Teamsite (Watchfire) we see different solutions: 1.Use Google before deleting the page to find pages that link to it 2.Use Linkbot after deletion to find possible broken links 3....???

Other change proposals and process changes 2.Lately we experience a lot of deployment and workflow problems. These are caused by external factors (Cor CPU being overloaded by different applications). What can we do about it?
