Strategies to Engage Minds! Economic Development Increasing the pipeline of students going into STEM careers College and career readiness

 What does it look like in the classroom?  What are students doing?  What are teachers doing?

 The Oregon Workforce Investment Board (OWIB) Manufacturing Workforce Committee has identified inadequate STEM knowledge and skills as one of their four priority challenge areas.  The Oregon STEM Employer Coalition reports that Oregon companies need a larger STEM-educated workforce but there is a gap between the need and the output of STEM proficient students coming out of our education system.  Only 40 percent of students who enter a STEM program complete a STEM degree.

“An approach to teaching and lifelong learning that emphasizes the natural interconnectedness of the four separate STEM disciplines. The connections are made explicit through collaboration between educators resulting in real and appropriate context built into instruction, curriculum, and assessment. The common element of problem solving is emphasized across all STEM disciplines allowing students to discover, explore, and apply critical thinking skills as they learn. “

 Defines STEM as interconnected  Includes standards work ◦ Common Core State Standards ◦ Next Generation Science Standards ◦ Ed Tech Standards ◦ Common Career Technical Core  Prepares Students for College, Career and Citizenship  Targets Goals  Focuses on Instructional Core

 Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.  A career pathway to high wage, high skill, high demand jobs.  Connected and interrelated through multiple careers and subject areas.  Development of strong problem-solving, critical-thinking and project management skills.  Critical in today’s global market.

 A network of organizations that partner to coordinate their efforts around: ◦ shared vision ◦ common agenda ◦ shared measurements ◦ mutually reinforcing activities and ◦ continuous communication and collaboration.

1.Common Agenda A shared vision for change that includes a common understanding of the problem and a joint approach to solving it.

2.Shared Measurements Agreement on how success will be measured and reported. 3. Mutually Reinforcing Activities Coordination of differentiated activities where each partner uses their own expertise to support coordinated action.

4. Continuous Communication Communication is essential for developing trust and common language among partners where each recognizes and appreciates the common motivation behind differing efforts. Decisions are based on objective evidence and best solutions rather than the priorities of one partner over another.

5. Backbone Support Organization Staff to support the Collective Impact Partnership who has the time and structure to support partners who don’t have this time to spare (project manager, data manager, and facilitator). This staff will provide support for communications, data collection and reporting, administrative and logistical details and establishing collaboration processes.
