Comments on S-101 by Japanese ECDIS manufacturers Shinichi Kikuchi Japan Hydrographic Association TSMAD20/DIPWG2 Rostock, Germany

Benefits of new ENC Meeting was coordinated by a company of electronic navigational equipments on 16 April 2010 in Tokyo. JRC, Tokyo Keiki and Furuno attended the meeting. Outline & Project Plan of S-101 were reported. Manufacturers understand the merits for IHO community by the new standards based on ISO. Manufacturers required to show benefits for their costumers as WOW at the Stakeholder WS. They also suggested examples of the benefits as following: ex.: Low cost, 3D view, speedy update, etc.

Work Items of TSMAD Explanation at the meeting on the work items to create the benefits : Integration of Multiple Layer - HSSC1-06.1F Template for Information Overlays in ECDIS - HSSC1INF3 S-101 Support Files - TSMAD H New CSL in XML is explained as a new item to create benefits.

A Perspective I asked Mr. Horst Hecht, What is benefit of new ENC? at a reception of WEND meeting held in Tokyo in Sept Shortly after consideration, he suggested overlapping of nautical publications on chart information on ECDIS.

Expected new ENC benefits Marine Information Overlaps (MIO) SENC friendly ENC Additional update profiles Current: Record-base update Additional: Object-oriented update using metadata Improved Color and Symbol Library * I could not show the above items, because there is no consensus.

IMO Standards and S-100 ENC Manufactures suggested ECDIS is a difficult navigational equipment whose standards corrected before the amendment of IMO standards, such as S-63. Supposed Relationship of S-57 ENC and New ENC S-57 ENC Subsets of S-57 ENC Product Specification Template of MIO - S-57 version Fixed/ frozen A part of S-57 Following amended IMO standards S-100 ENC S-101 ENC Product Spec.
