Form of Writing: Simulated Journal Writing. This is where the student takes on the role of a character or historical figure in a book. The students write their entries as a journal. The journal is a personal experience about what is happening in a person’s life. A journal usually has a date, setting, and important information that is going on in the person’s life. Stage of Writing: We are going to be doing the prewriting stage of simulated journal writing. Moore K. (2008) Simulated Journal Writing Prewriting Stage. Valdosta, Ga.

Stage of Writing continued- First, before doing the prewriting stage of simulated journal writing we will need to do some reading. Everyone must read a simulated journal. After reading a simulated journal the student would be asked to compose their own simulated journal using the different stages of the writing process. For the prewriting stage of the process the students will complete a graphic organizer. Moore K. (2008) Simulated Journal Writing Prewriting Stage. Valdosta, Ga.

Completing the graphic organizer continued. The students will become the character of the book. They will record a date on every journal entry. The students will also write an important fact or information that happened on that date. The students will also need to describe the setting in their first journal writing. Moore K. (2008) Simulated Journal Writing Prewriting Stage. Valdosta, Ga.

Model May 15, 1773 Dear Diary, This morning at 5:00 I had to wake up my husband John to get up for work but he wouldn’t wake up. I immediately called the doc. He came over as fast as he could. He asked me to leave the room so I did. An hour later he came out and told me he had passed away. I am so sad. I don’t know what to do. Moore K. (2008) Simulated Journal Writing Prewriting Stage. Valdosta, Ga.

Practice Activity: As a class we would take several days to read out loud the book, I Thought My Soul Would Rise and Fly: The Diary of Patsy, a Freed Girl, Mans Bluff, South Carolina (Hansen 19 )This is a simulated journal about a young girl that is living during the time the slaves were abolished. After reading this book we would do a class simulated journal using the book. Together we would do our prewriting graphic organizer on the board. Moore K. (2008) Simulated Journal Writing Prewriting Stage. Valdosta, Ga.

Assessment Activity: For the assessment activity the teacher will provide the students with a list of books that are simulated journals. The students will be asked to choose a book to read. After reading the book the student will choose a character to do a simulated journal about. The students will complete a graphic organizer for the prewriting stage of simulated journal writing.
