Day 12 Pushing all your buttons
Elimination Questions This was obviously a challenging task… great work! Themes that emerged: Questions which varied an existing situation and asked students to consider the impact. Questions framed around the ideas of compare and contrast. Questions which required interpretation of a problem or solution. Questions which required making a connection between and among ideas. Questions which probed possible misconceptions.
Things to work on… Some lines of questioning stopped short of asking for explanation; never got to "why?" Some choices of both vernacular and mathematical language and vocabulary were ambiguous: we need to model clear, correct and precise use of vocabulary for students.
ut simply, the only point of asking questions is to raise issues about which a teacher needs information (probe) or about which the students need to think (push). P pg. 13
Working inside another Black Box Congrats! You just received a grant giving each of your students their own TI Nspire CAS. Unfortunately, your grant requires you to use it in your systems of equation unit – and document your work.
Inside YOUR Black Box Three groups of applets have been pre-loaded that are specifically designed for use with a unit on systems of equations
Get comfy… Follow the instructions on the handout and get used to the applications (and the Nspire) – How might you use these tools to deepen students’ understanding ? – How might you use these tools to gauge students’ understanding?
Schedule 11:15 – What is a Solution 11:30 – The Elimination Method 11:45 – Balanced System Focus on how these tools would push and probe
