doc.: IEEE /340r0 Submission 12Sept2003 John R. Barr (Motorola) TG3a PAR The PAR for TG3a states: –This project will define an alternative PHY clause for a higher data rate amendment to standard –The intent of this project is to provide a standard for a low complexity, low cost, low power consumption alternate PHY for (comparable to the goals for ). The data rate will be high enough, 110 Mb/s or more (see 18a), to satisfy an evolutionary set of consumer multi-media industry needs for WPAN communications. The project will address the requirements to support multimedia data types in multiple compliant co-located systems and also coexistence (18b).
doc.: IEEE /340r0 Submission 12Sept2003 John R. Barr (Motorola) TG3a Technical Requirements Supplements to TG3 Functionality: –It is envisioned that the alt-PHY project will allow supplements to In addition to the PHY itself, the project may include MAC functionality necessary to support the selected PHY. –It is required that the alt-PHY operate with the MAC without fundamental change in operation. It is also required that any enhancements or modifications are enabled by reference to alt-PHY specific PIB parameters. –As an example, from the project request, document 01/532r0 (alt-PHY study group proposal), location awareness is considered as a possible feature of certain alt-PHY technologies and is an example of supplemental MAC functionality. Such a provision may be supported by the PHY PIB parameters in the proposed standard MAC or via supplemental MAC capabilities provided by the alt-PHY project.
doc.: IEEE /340r0 Submission 12Sept2003 John R. Barr (Motorola) Some Comments about Changes Channel time allocation not optimized for MPEG-2 variable bit rate streams MAC support for Mesh networks MAC too complicated for simple video applications Ranging/location/identity
doc.: IEEE /340r0 Submission 12Sept2003 John R. Barr (Motorola) Most of these changes require new PAR Not required to support new PHY Apply to current GHz PHY as well as UWB PHY Would apply to any new PHY (e.g., mmW or 5 GHz) adopted by WG.
doc.: IEEE /340r0 Submission 12Sept2003 John R. Barr (Motorola) Two Sessions to Hear Suggestions Wednesday 1PM and 3:30 PM TG3 sessions Requested interest in participation: –Mitsihiro Suzuki – Sony –Jerome Tjia – Philips –Pekka Ranta – Nokia Please see Jim Allen or John Barr to get added to the presentation list.
doc.: IEEE /340r0 Submission 12Sept2003 John R. Barr (Motorola) Next Steps This document will be updated to track all presentations suggested improvements. If sufficient interest is found, group may recommend formation of TG3b study group to update TG3 MAC.
doc.: IEEE /340r0 Submission 12Sept2003 John R. Barr (Motorola) Singapore Presentation Summary Mesh Network Outline – –Discussion on list with Mesh keyword. Multimedia Considerations – –Discussion on list with Streams keyword Mobile Environments – –No discussion planned until additional requirements defined. Al Heberling indicated that wireless1394 PAL would like to review new MLMEs.
doc.: IEEE /340r0 Submission 12Sept2003 John R. Barr (Motorola) Discussion Summary 22 people attended the session (full) Many in audience still learning about the TG3 MAC and were seeking information on how to apply MAC features. MESH and STREAMS threads will be started on reflector to discuss requirements and proposed solutions. Time will be allocated in Albuquerque to continue discussion of possible study group.
