Grab and Go Nutrition is a way we can feed a child’s body and mind. Lets explore the super highway of breakfast!

No Kid Hungry Share Our Strength  One in four children in the state of NC go without food everyday.  This program was started to ensure that every child receives the food they need.  Grab and Go is just one of many programs out there to ensure just that goal.  Why should I participate?

Too Hungry to Learn? Lets look at the statistics of what happens when children do not receive proper nutrition  A survey was taken across American and Teachers Agree that kids who are hungry:  Cant concentrate 88%  Lack energy 82%  Poor academic performance 82%  Cause Discipline problems 67%  Fifty percent of all teachers agreed that hungry children in the classroom was at the highest level in the four years of conducting research

How has it improved since the start of Universal Breakfast Programs? Let’s take a look!  Improvement in alertness 76%  Pick up in attendance 57%  Decrease in visits to school nurse 55%  Discipline in school as a whole 54%  Since No Kid Hungry started in 2010, more than 28 million additional school breakfast have been served to students across American

Success at Littlefield Middle School  On February 19, 2014 Littlefield Middle School was recognized for the largest increase in participation in our breakfast program.  We did it and we can do it again!  This would not have been possible without our children coming in and receiving a breakfast and supporting our school. Thank you. Give your self a hand!

Why is breakfast so Important? Lets take a look  Breakfast is “brain food”. Your bodies last meal was supper. There has been at least eight to ten hours since your body has had nutrition. You need to “fuel up”  Without the Vitamins, protein, carbs, and yes even a small amount of sugar, you can not effectively function.  Hunger affects your mood, mind, and yes your physical activity.

What can I do and How can I help?  Give your self a great start! You can receive a nutritious breakfast in the Hornet Café.  Encourage your friends to stop with you.  Tell your parents that we have a universal free program that allows all students to have a healthy breakfast at no cost to them.  Eating your breakfast also gives your teaches extra time in the morning to do attendance or maybe collect homework from the night before or even enjoy breakfast with you!

Do I have to pick up everything? What are my choices?  These are common questions that are asked when children come through. We do not want anyone to waste breakfast items and we encourage you to talk to us to let us know new ideas you may have for “new” items that we can offer. This next slide will be information to help you make choices and to know you have one. We do have to follow guidelines set by the USDA and Federal government.

We offer four items everyday. You as students must take three.  Our menu consist of cereal, grahams, fresh or can fruit, juice, milk and entrée (such as pizza, bagel, etc.)  These next items that are listed are considered a “one” count item.  Milk, juice, can fruit  2 packs of grahams, one poptart, cereal bar  Or any individual cereal  If you choose to pick up these items, you must have three.

What three can they be?  You must choose a fruit or juice with your breakfast. Here are a few examples:  Breakfast bagel, juice, grahams  Cereal bar, fruit cup, and milk  Yogurt, grahams and juice  Remember three is good, four is better!  The choice is yours. You do not have to pick up the milk everyday. Please ask any of our staff. We will be more than happy to help you

Three does not always mean “three” What is Ms. Bell talking about???  These next items count as “two” because they are a combination item.  Breakfast pizza, breakfast bagel, sausage biscuit, French toast sticks, all pancakes, all waffles, breakfast sticks (plain and blueberry) and cheese toast.

What are my choices ?  When these items are offered, you are only required to pick up a juice.  For example, if we have French toast sticks, you can pick up a juice and you have a reimbursable breakfast.  Remember, three is good, four is better! The choices are limitless! Please feel free to ask any of our staff and we can answer any of your questions.

What if I want to pick up more? Can I?  YES!!! If we are serving one of the “two” count items, you may pick up the milk and juice if you choose to. This is just to let you know you have a choice and to help you understand them.  You can pick up pizza, juice, milk, and grahams! That is fuel!!!

My Goal and Mission For Littlefield Middle School  Thank you to “all students and staff” here at Littlefield Middle School for helping to get us to where we are now. My mission and goal is to feed the mind, bodies, and hearts of all who eat in the Hornet Café! With your support, we will achieve great things together. My staff and I are always available to answer any question you may have. It is a pleasure to serve you each and every day
