Other interactions occur of course, for example CRADs have subcontracts with small businesses and/or universities. But seldom does research by others make it directly to a LM Product or Program without LM IR&D and/or CRAD efforts. For the DoD SBIR program about 25% of the awards every year are to small businesses that have not received a SBIR award in the past. Must stay engaged to find the gems. Small businesses are a key source of innovative ideas. The sheer amount of NSF investments in universities drives us to consider and constantly evaluate their technology developments. LM reported IR&D expenditures of $750M in it’s 2009 annual report. IR&D is funding we recover from government contracts. We use this funding to invest in R&D. We also receive multiples of this in customer funded Contract R&D (CRAD). 1 4 TRL 6 8 Innovation is Key to the Long Term Success of LM
