Session Objectives I can locate the Transformed ELA MPIs in the NCDPI LiveBinder. I can explain how the linguistic complexity of ELA Common Core Standards affects teaching and learning for ELLs. I can use the MPIs to illustrate how the progression of language complexity used by students increases as proficiency levels increase.

Session Objectives I can use the Transformed ELA MPIs as a tool for planning a lesson. I can use the Transformed ELA MPIs to scaffold the language needed by students for reading. I can use the Transformed ELA MPIs along with WIDA’s Performance Definition rubrics and Can Do Descriptors to formatively assess language progression.

And this is important because…? Common Core ELA Standards Describe the language skills needed for students to be successful in school. Include K-12 Standards in Reading, Writing, Listening, & Speaking. –And literacy expectations for other subjects! Can guide ESL teachers’ understanding of the linguistic complexity required of ELLs in their classes.

And because… ESL teachers must make informed choices about what to teach! In order to accelerate language learning while minimizing content gaps.

Transformed ELA MPIs These documents are intended to support lesson planning for English language learners by ESL and content teachers. Transformed ELA MPIs illustrate how ELLs of all English language proficiency levels can participate in grade level instruction.
