Geneva, 15 May 2009 Status of NGN architecture related studies in ITU-T SG13 Olivier Le Grand WP 3/13 chairman France Telecom JOINT ITU-T SG13 - IEEE NGSON WORKSHOP ON OVERLAY NETWORKING (Geneva, 15 May 2009)

Geneva, 15 May Separation of services from transport in NGN (Rec. Y.2011) 2 NGN transport NGN services e.g., Voice telephony services (audio, fax, etc.) e.g., Data services (WWW, , etc.) e.g., Video services (TV, movie, etc.) CO-CS, CO-PS and CL-PS layer technologies "NGN service stratum" vs "NGN transport stratum" Each stratum comprises one or more layers, where each layer is conceptually composed of a data (or user) plane, a control plane, and a management plane

Geneva, 15 May NGN architecture overview (Rec Y.2012) Transport stratum Service stratum Control Media Management Functions Management ANI Transport Control Functions Resource and Admission Control Functions Network Attachment Control Functions NNI UNI Application Support Functions & Service Support Functions Applications Transport Functions End-User Functions Other Networks Service Control Functions Service User Profiles Transport User Profiles

Geneva, 15 May "Open Service Environment functional architecture in NGN": Based on OSE capabilities and functional components defined in Rec ITU-T Y.2234 Objectives: define the OSE functional architecture model relationship/mapping with already defined Y.2012 ASF&SSF FEs Ongoing work on ASF&SSF: Y.OSE-arch

Geneva, 15 May NGN OSE functional positioning

Geneva, 15 May Overlay networking and NGN Inputs referring to "Overlay networking" targeting different scenarios: e.g. for supporting multicast (IPTV, Content Delivery), … Scenarios, corresponding requirements and capabilities to be consolidated Relationship to NGN functional architecture: Cases to be considered (on a per scenario basis): Overlay to the IP layer but still part of NGN Transport stratum Overlay to the NGN Transport stratum, i.e. part of the NGN Service stratum Overlay to the NGN Service stratum, i.e. above the NGN Functions to be supported Relationship to existing NGN functions and functional entities to be assessed

Geneva, 15 May Conclusion The NGN architecture is being enhanced in order to support Open Service Environment (OSE) capabilities as defined in Y.2234 Paving the way towards a possible NGN "Service Delivery Environment/Platform" architecture Collaboration with other SDOs such as OMA, OASIS, TMF,… Use of "Overlay networking" techniques in NGN is being studied Consolidation expected in terms of addressed scenarios, corresponding requirements and related architectural impacts Note: See backup slides for information on NGN architecture related recommendations (approved or under development)
