Lesson 15 Fifty pence worth of trouble

Very few of the fifty pence pieces and pound coins I have given him have found their way there. Instead he bought himself fifty pence worth of trouble.

On his way to the sweet shop, he dropped his fifty pence and it bounced along the pavement and then disappeared down a drain. Bounce-v.( 使 ) 反跳, 弹起 Pavement-n. 人行道 Drain-n. 排水沟 George took off his jacket, rolled up his sleeves and pushed his right arm through the drain cover( 下水道井盖).

A crowd of people gathered round him and a lady rubbed his arm with soap and butter, but George was firmly stuck. stick- v. 被难住:被固定、卡住、塞住或阻住 --She has been stuck in traffic for an hour. 她被卡在交通阻塞中达一个小时 The fire brigade was called and two firefighters freed George using a special type of grease. George was not too upset by his experience because the lady who owns the sweet shop heard about his troubles and rewarded him with a large box of chocolate. Reward-vt. 酬劳, 奖赏 --His efforts were rewarded by success. 他的努力获得了成功。
