The ITS Professional Capacity Building (PCB) Program

What is “Professional Capacity Building”?: Process of developing knowledge and skills that directly increase effectiveness in job performance Relies on multiple methods to achieve “continuous” and “accessible” learning: –Training –Education –Technical Assistance –Outreach –Peer Exchange –Others Program Definition

ITS PCB Program: Philosophy With the right mix of training, education, technical assistance, and information, individuals and agencies can better prepare to meet ITS needs, and receive the right depth of information at the right time. Readily accessible requires that the most effective form of learning materials be available when the need arises for a professional to learn.

The ITS PCB Program Portal for ITS Learning: –Over 30 instructor-led courses in current ITS Curriculum –Links to other courses and sources of technical assistance Reliance on partnerships Annual program of $3 to 3.5 million

ITS PCB Program: Partners

ITS PCB Program: Content F our major program elements: 1.Training: Building State-of-the-Art ITS Knowledge and Skills –new course development –course updates –delivery and distance learning 2.Education: Creating the Transportation Workforce of the Future 3.Technical Assistance: Timely Problem Solving with a Network of Experts 4.Information Outreach: Information Where and When You Need It

Training

 Coursework: Average of 3,000 participants take PCB classroom training per year  An ITS Curriculum with 3 levels of learning based on known needs:  Awareness Learning  Core Learning  Specialized Learning

Training: The ITS Curriculum

Additional Curricula Systems Engineering (SE) Series Standards Transit More?

SE Series

Training  An ITS Curriculum Guide: An on-line engine tailors the ITS Curriculum to individual or agency needs and preferences

Training: Opportunities  Catalogs: Making training accessible; lists PCB Program and partner training available around the Nation

Training: Distance Learning  The PCB T3 Program: “Technical Training by Telephone”; brief technical training/assistance sessions presented through audio- teleconference technologies  Web-based courses: HTML presentations with testing opportunities; Currently hosting 3 courses with 2 additional by end of 2003

Education

 Academic institutions and the incorporation of ITS in courses and degree programs  Council of University Transportation Centers (CUTC) and the marketing and distribution of information  CITE Consortium
